Public asked to help with boats, high-water vehicles.
Ed Emmett, Harris County judge, asked the public to help rescue people stranded by Harvey.
"We cant wait for assets to come from outside", he said." If you have a high-water vehicle or boat, help us out".
The boats and vehicles are needed to move people to highground, where they will be transported in buses to shelters, he said. "We need to get this done during the day", he said.
He noted that members of the public should be aware of safety requirements, such as having life jackets and proper certification.

IMPORTANT
Please scroll down to see this story. it is not at the beginning of the link, but after scrolling down some, you will see it.
I have never seen a request like this. This county judge is asking the public to help rescue people. Not the fire department or police,,,but the public with a... "high water vehicle or boat"
"We cannot wait for assets to come from outside..."...
Very frightening ..Prayers for people in Harris County Texas (Harris County Texas, has a population of 4,000,000 and includes Houston and some surrounding areas.
a map of the area:

At the top of the CNN story..."Houston area may get 50 inches of rain"...when you link to the story above, in Original Post..(not the map) , you will see this headline. That is more than 4 feet of rain in a few days.. The call for help comes after a story where a local hospital is being evacuated. Each story is about a single paragraph, one on top of another, with some pictures in between. Also it may take some time to scroll down to that particular quote about needing help from those who have boats and high water vehicles, but be patient, this is a story that is currently evolving. As you scroll down, CNN is providing current info on this story. This is truly horrific!!... As I watch, (3:06 ET) ...one death reported from Houston area .......in addition..as you scroll down, you may have to ask the link to ..show more..then hit that and it will continue to inform you. Perhaps after that, you will see the story about the judge asking for help from the public........................................
As I looked at the story again...the governor has called out the National Guard..... same link as original post....
Texas governor holds news conference at about 4pm ET
Gov. Greg Abbott said the state has activated 3,000 national guard and state guard service members from Houston to Victoria, to Corpus Christi and in between. They have activated 500 vehicles, 6 shelters, and 14 aircraft.
Texas DOT deployed 400 people.Involved in removing debris and repairing signs in Corpus Christi and Victoria, primarily.
So one positive about where weare right now is that Texas DOT and other city folks in the Corpus Christi region are in the early stages of the rebuilding process.

(16,104 posts)take the Harvey core low back out over the Gulf, and then it goes back up west of Houston (the bad quadrant again) - expected to double the amount of rainfall they have seen already.
All the forecast models agreed.

(38,439 posts)Some warning was given, and it was very accurate as you said. "...back up west of Houston".. I don't know what to say. An area with four million people is getting torrential rain, unlike anything ever seen in the area.

(41,758 posts)The question is - where do they go after they escape?
6.5 million people live in Houston - where do they go - how do you feed and hydrate them?

(16,104 posts)America will not be immune from millions and millions of 'climate change refugees.'
Katrina and Harvey are just the start.

(38,439 posts)A storm came out of nowhere, and Texas was hit, almost with no warning at all...Many inches of rain, but I recall that the weather bureau said that as the storm came ashore, it read the lowest air pressure that had been seen. I recall talking to a friend about this, and he said..that was an example of this climate change that Gore was talking about. (as well as hundreds of scientists.)...My friend was a chemistry teacher (now retired) and he said that he was discussing this "climate change" idea for years. That low pressure with that storm he said,..is climate change !!!

(51,626 posts)No plans to address all the various needs associated climate change. REAL science and data isn't even being allowed out and funding, staff, research are non existant. When the next 45 voter bitches about not getting help when THEY need it I will salute them with my middle finger. I have no sympathy for them and their situation. It was/is their CHOICE. Too bad, so sad!

We have never successfully evacuated 6+ million people from a major city in less than 72 hours. It may well not be possible.
