Trump has decided to end DACA, with 6-month delay
Source: Politico
President Donald Trump has decided to end the Obama-era program that grants work permits to undocumented immigrants who arrived in the country as children, according to two sources familiar with his thinking. Senior White House aides huddled Sunday afternoon to discuss the rollout of a decision likely to ignite a political firestorm and fulfill one of the presidents core campaign promises.

(27 posts)are threatening to bring a lawsuit against the federal government on the basis that DACA is an excess of executive power (creating a new class of immigrants with rights that Congress did not).
Trump is caught in the position of having to defend DACA in court.

(58,724 posts)I believe America is stronger together. When we embrace immigrants, not denigrate them. When we protect families, not tear them apart. When we build bridges, not walls.
It is why I co-sponsored legislation to protect DREAMers throughout my time in the senate as well as legislation to enact comprehensive immigration reform, and it is why I will do everything in my power as president to protect President Obamas executive actions, go further to provide relief for families, and introduce comprehensive immigration reform with a path to full and equal citizenship within my first 100 days in office.

I have worked on Democratic campaigns in five states.
To me a SJW is keyboard warrior. They will tweet and share Facebook memes but couldn't bring there a**es out to vote against Donald Trump.
They watch what is going on know and they don't care.
Progressive professionals absolutely can use it as a slur. I will not make any apologies for it.

(25,816 posts)You are intelligent and informed. more than I. I see nearly 1,000,000 people
affected by this, torn from families, shipped off to where? Will congress
approve funds? The outrage that this will produce, not just in the congress, but among the people, will stall this, and it will fizzle. I hope I'm right too. I still have a little
hope left.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)And allow me to reiterate how much I hope that you are correct and that something does prevent this from actually being implemented.
That being said, the actual process of revoking the executive order is something that I don't see Trump changing his mind about after he announces that he will do it.
I guess we can hope for some sort of Congressional action on immigration that results in legislation along the lines of the DREAM Act actually becoming law.
Igel
(35,359 posts)Not mostly. And not immediately.
It's like the 10 million other unauthorized immigrants. They're not covered by DACA but they haven't been shipped off.
In fact, if you're covered by DACA it's almost a sure thing that your parent(s) and/or guardian(s), the people that are taking care of you and connected to you in all kinds of ways, are subject to deportation, so that DACA registration's a hook into a larger pool of unauthorized immigrants.

Many on the right, even those who support protections for children brought into the country illegally through no fault of their own, argue that DACA is unconstitutional because former President Barack Obama carried it out unilaterally instead of working through Congress."

Paladin
(28,276 posts)I'd like to think so, but I've got my doubts.
Calista241
(5,586 posts)First, the DACA program itself was clearly unconstitutional. President Obama just created a program out of thin air without any congressional authorization. His heart and motivations were in the right place, something needed to be done, and our leader at the time acted. President Obama acted as great leaders do. But DACA is never going to survive a court challenge to its constitutionality.
Second; if Trump has given a 6 month termination notice, and if children can apply for 2 year permits up until the end of that 6 months, that means Congress has 2 and 1/2 years to come up with immigration reform before ICE gets turned loose.
I think enough Republicans are aware of changing demographics that reform will get done this time. It nearly got done during the Bush Administration, and maybe 10 years after the first attempt, we can actually get the reform we want this time.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)The DREAM Act was developed and amended for years and was something that Obama and many Democrats fought for in spite of Republican obstructionism.
Congress wouldn't pass it - in spite of Obama's best efforts, so he figured out a way to get some of the elements of the DREAM Act enforced via executive action.
