Republican attempt to deflect Trump-Russia probes could backfire: sources

(Reuters) - Republican lawmaker Devin Nunes investigation into whether Obama administration officials used classified intelligence reports to discredit Donald Trumps 2016 campaign team could backfire on the congressman - and the president, sources familiar with the reports said.
The reports contain no evidence that any aides to former Democratic President Barack Obama acted improperly, the sources said, but they do indicate some Trump associates may have violated an obscure 1799 law, the Logan Act, which prohibits unauthorized U.S. citizens from negotiating with a foreign government that has a dispute with the United States.
The spying reports also are relevant to the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into conclusions by U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia worked to tilt last Novembers election in Republican Trumps favor, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Muellers office declined to comment.
Russia, under U.S. sanctions for rights abuses and its 2014 annexation of Crimea, has repeatedly denied allegations of election meddling. Trump has denied any possible collusion between his campaign and Moscow, an issue that has loomed over the new presidency.

(21,174 posts)Of course his collusion with Russia is not reported much in the local papers. It will take a giantic billboard highlighting his treachery and door to door canvassing educating voters but the caveat is that area also went easily for twitler.

(14,175 posts)So if, hopefully when, Trump is charged with a serious crime they will immediately pivot, as per instructions from their RW media gurus, to en masse start screaming about Mueller being part of the secret Democrat/Soros deep state with an agenda to destroy America.
This should be a joke, but I can see it happening

(14,175 posts)Because I've heard those interviews with radio personalities shouting about how there is nothing there. That if there was then Mueller would be acting on it. That they must be digging and digging for something, anything, to pin on Trump and they can't find it. But the MSM keeps the story going for ratings and for their own liberal agenda.
So the MSM should be pinning down anyone that is purporting this to get a response about IF Trump is charged, would they then take those charges seriously. Maybe they've tried. Those weasels are so slippery. But the MSM news seems to be satisfied with the daily talking points (from whatever party) and if they pivot 180 the next day (if those first talking points are proven wrong) the MSM hosts just "reset" and accept the new talking points as the new reality.

The Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), has been under intense criticism amidst charges of obstructing the very investigation into Russian collusion with the Trump campaign that hes supposed to be leading. Both Democrats and even some staunch Republicans have called on Nunes, who was a member of the Trump transition team, to step down from his position leading the committees probe because of his leaking of confidential intelligence info to the subjects of his investigation and his own newly-revealed financial ties to Russia. Just last week, The Los Angeles Times revealed the details of Nunes net worth, disclosing that the vast majority of his money is tied up in an investment in the Alpha Omega Winery LLC.
If you happened to have visited the website of the Napa Valley-based vineyard before the story broke, the site clearly listed the Luding Trading Company, a major Russian alcohol distributor, as the winemakers outlet in Russia. Once the news of Nunes investment became public knowledge, however, Alpha Omega Winery suddenly removed Luding Trading Companys name from their website. They also tweeted out a claim that their only business with Russia consisted of the one-time sale of 22 cases of wine to an un-named broker.
The only time Alpha Omega did business in Russia was in 2013 when a broker handled a one-time transaction for 22 cases of wine.

A visit to the website of Luding Trading Company tells a different story altogether. A 2009 Alpha Omega Cabernet Sauvignon is clearly listed as available to purchase, as is a 2012 vintage Chardonnay that was surely still sitting in a barrel waiting to be bottled when the 2013 transaction allegedly took place. Besides both of these wines from Alpha Omega, Luding Trading also offers their own Kremlin Award brand cognac, a brand name that the company licensed directly from the Russian government.
To give you an idea of just how involved Luding Trading Company is with the Russsian government, it would be helpful to note that the companys management was awarded the order of The Star Of The Fatherland with the First Deputy Chief of Administrative Services of the President of the Russian Federation, and representatives of the Administration of the President, State Duma, and Council of Federation present.
