UPDATED 2 X: Price says he'll pay for charter flights

HHS Secretary Tom Price said he will write a personal check to the federal government for the costs of traveling on private jets and will permanently halt his use of charter flights.

The taxpayers wont pay a dime for my seat on those planes, Price said in a statement Thursday afternoon.

The announcement follows a POLITICO investigation finding that Price has taken at least 26 charter flights costing more than $400,000 since May to conduct official business within the country.

UPDATE 1:

Price Will Cover Cost Of Private Flights: The Taxpayers Wont Pay A Dime

By MATT SHUHAM Published SEPTEMBER 28, 2017 4:25 PM

Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price said Thursday that he would repay the U.S. treasury for the cost of his private flights costing upwards of $300,000.

Politico exposed the substantial expense, spread across dozens of private charter flights, in an investigation last week. Since then, the HHS inspector generals office and the House Oversight Committee have said theyre looking into the matter. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that well see about Prices continued service in his administration.

Price on Thursday morning said I think weve still got the confidence of the President, but he made much more concrete commitments in a statement later in the day. In a bulleted list, Price committed to cooperating with the inspector generals investigation, ceasing all private charter flights as HHS secretary, and writing a personal check to the US Treasury for the expenses of my travel on private charter planes.

The taxpayers wont pay a dime for my seat on those planes, Price said.

Read the HHS secretarys full statement:

I continue to welcome and am cooperating fully with the Office of Inspector General (OIG) review of processes and procedures related to my official travel as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). I have also taken the additional step of initiating a departmental review to determine if any changes or reforms are necessary. As I have previously stated, all of this travel was approved by legal and HHS officials.

Despite this, I regret the concerns this has raised regarding the use of taxpayer dollars. All of my political career Ive fought for the taxpayers. It is clear to me that in this case, I was not sensitive enough to my concern for the taxpayer. I know as well as anyone that the American people want to know that their hard-earned dollars are being spent wisely by government officials.

To make sure everyone knows that I understand and appreciate this, and to make sure everyone knows that this will never happen again, I am taking the following steps:

My staff and I will continue to cooperate fully with the OIG and internal review.

I will take no more private charter flights as Secretary of HHS. No exceptions.

Today, I will write a personal check to the US Treasury for the expenses of my travel on private charter planes. The taxpayers wont pay a dime for my seat on those planes.

I have spent forty years both as a doctor and in public service putting people first. It has been my personal honor to serve the American people, and I look forward to continuing that service.

UPDATE 2:

Price to pay $52K out of estimated $400K in travel costs

BY NATHANIEL WEIXEL - 09/28/17 05:49 PM EDT

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Tom Price will reimburse taxpayers just under $52,000 for the cost of his charter jet travels for official government business, which is estimated at more than $400,000.

Price is taking the unprecedented step of reimbursing the government for his share of the travel, an HHS spokesperson said in an e-mailed statement to The Hill. Secretary Price will write a personal check to the US Treasury for $51,887.31. The taxpayers wont pay a dime for his seats on charter planes.

The former Georgia congressman has come under fire for using charter aircraft at taxpayer expense for official travel. Some of those flights overlapped with personal events, including a lunch with his son.

In a statement Thursday, Price pledged to halt all charter flights as well as reimburse the government.

Jake Tapper is pointing out that this might mean the equivalent of a business class ticket, NOT the cost of the private jet itself.

I just checked, Tom Price has a net worth of almost $14 million, and he has an annual salary of $199,000. He can certainly afford to pay the full $400,000.

I wonder if he's so quick to pony up because he wants the spotlight off his other shady office ethics.

The other reason may be because he has a deep feeling of guilt and wants to make amends.

Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price says he is reimbursing U.S. taxpayers for his official travel on private charter planes.

In a statement released on Thursday, he said, "Today, I will write a personal check to the US Treasury for the expenses of my travel on private charter planes. The taxpayers won't pay a dime for my seat on those planes."

The expense for his seat on those planes comes out to $51,887.31, according to an HHS spokesperson.

Politico has reported that the total cost of the private jets Price flew on was more than $400,000 and included trips to places where he has friends and family. Price is not covering the cost for support staff and others who flew with him on those charter planes, staff who otherwise would have flown commercial.

What the FUCK?

Price is a former member of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), a politically conservative non-profit association founded in 1943 to "fight socialized medicine and to fight the government takeover of medicine."[11][12] The AAPS opposes Medicare and mandatory vaccination. Price is also a member of the American Medical Association.[13]

He's paying for "his share"? WTF does that mean? Were these planes going there anyway, and he's just paying for his ticket? And how does paying $50,000 of a $400,000 cost equate to the taxpayers' not having to pay a dime? Who's paying the other $350,000? Santa Claus?
