UPDATED: President Trump on Puerto Rico: 'At a Local Level They Have to Give Us More Help'

President Donald Trump briefly addressed the media on the White House lawn has he made his way to Marine One with First Lady Melania by his side. The Commander-in-Chief is on his way to view hurricane ravaged Puerto Rico today, the recovery of which has become something of a political football.

Starting last Friday, and through the weekend, Mr. Trump was in a rhetorical battle with those who have been critical of this administration’s response to Puerto Rico, especially Carmen Yulin Cruz, the mayor of San Juan, who had suggested that the US Territory she calls home was on the verge of “genicide.”

-snip-

The fact that the sitting President of the United States would call out the character of those without power, communications and drinkable water — and desperate for any help — seemed distasteful by many. So what did Trump say today? Well, it wasn’t that great (emphasis mine):

Well, I think she’s come back a long way. I think it’s now ago no longer acknowledged what a great job we’ve done. Texas and Florida we get an a plus. I think we’ve done just as good in Puerto Rico and it’s a much tougher situation. Now the roads are cleared. Communications starting to come back. We need their truck drivers. Their drivers have to start driving trucks. We have to do that. At a local level they have to give us more help. I will tell you the first responders, the military, FEMA, they have done an incredible job in Puerto Rico. And whether it’s her or anybody else, they’re all starting to say it. I appreciate very much the governor and his comments. He has said we have done an incredible job and that’s the truth.

UPDATE:

Trump: We’ve done as well in Puerto Rico as we did in Texas and Florida

BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 10/03/17 09:01 AM EDT

President Trump on Tuesday said he believes his administration has done just as well on the recovery efforts in Puerto Rico as it has in Florida and Texas.

“I think it’s now acknowledged what a great job we’ve done. And people are looking at that day. And in Texas and in Florida we get an A+. And I’ll tell you what, I think we’ve done just as good in Puerto Rico, and it’s actually a much tougher situation,” Trump told reporters.

Trump has received criticism from some Democratic lawmakers for the relief efforts in Puerto Rico, which was ravaged by two hurricanes last month. A group of Democratic senators in a Tuesday letter to Trump called on him to send relief to and concentrate on efforts for the islands of Vieques and Culebra.

During his Tuesday morning remarks, Trump praised the first responders working on the island.
“But I will tell you, the first responders, the military, FEMA, they have done an incredible job in Puerto Rico,” he said.

We need their truck drivers. Their drivers have to start driving trucks.

They are burying their dead, weak from no food or water. Their boots were washed away, so no boot straps. But keep blaming them, fuckface

If the roads are washed out, blocked, or if they don't have gas for their cars, what are they supposed to do? Walk 10 miles or more from their home to the docks, drive all day, and then walk 10 miles or more back home?

Damn I hate the Orange Shitgibbon who is squatting in the White House!

who are "doing a wonderful job", according to trump, up to?

They have to recognize these problems. Are they not communicating that to trump and the woman who said this was "a good news" story?

Such incompetence.

He is incapable of framing anything except as it relates to his personal lying accomplishments.

Won't somebody rid us all of this guy?

Please, Mr. Mueller, keep working with all due diligence and speed.

He's more concerned about their feedback on "how he's doing" rather than the actual of what he's doing.

It's like when the hospital wheels my mom in for a procedure and the main thing they're concerned about is sending out an administrative person in a pantsuit to help me fill out the comment card and make sure I note that my loved one "received excellent service today." Um, lady, can I get my mom back in one piece first before I fill out your fucking comment card?
