Republicans signal some openness to new gun legislation on 'bump stocks'

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)In a departure from years of opposition to new gun control measures, some congressional Republicans started to show cautious interest Wednesday in legislation that would restrict devices that enable semi-automatic rifles to fire rapidly like automatic weapons.

Sen. John Cornyn, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, said he would like a hearing on the issue to learn more and said he has already brought it up to Sen. Chuck Grassley, the chairman of the Senate judiciary committee.
Cornyn, who said he owns "a lot of guns," said he found it odd that such a device, known as a "bump stock," can be used legally to convert semi-automatic weapons. "I think that's a legitimate question," he said, adding that it was an "obvious concern."
For his part, Grassley said he wanted a full investigation into the massacre in Las Vegas -- where a gunman killed at least 58 and wounded more than 500 earlier this week -- before he moved forward with a hearing.
Going farther than Cornyn, Sen. Ron Johnson flat-out said he had "no problem" banning the device.
"Automatic weapons are illegal," the Wisconsin Republican told reporters. "To me, that is part of that same type of process. So I have no problem banning those."

A rubber band will work almost as good as a bump stock. It is not that hard to convert any of the assualt stle weapons to full auto, anyway. Semi auto is plenty deadly as it is.Semi auto rifles need to go away. period.

bed with their hand out to the NRA during the upcoming elections but they have no intention of enacting any new laws that might actually help mitigate the gun problem while they are the majority party.

and placed in prison for having an illegal arsenal.

My interpretation of the 2nd Amendment does not allow for individuals to own guns, only authorized people such as the military, LEO's and state militiias.

They also HAVE to go after the modification kits to make semi autos into full autos. What the fuck does any one need with 20 full auto guns?

9. Such kits are fully illegal, and certainly not in lawful circulation.

May not be in any circulation, really. The modifications you'd need to make to a 1990 Olympic Arms AR-15 are not the same modifications you'd need to make to a Colt AR15 made in 1990, let alone ten years away on either side.

In 1986, rifles that could be converted to full auto by simply replacing the civilian semi-auto parts with full auto parts, were banned. Manufacturers started varying builds in ways that diverged from each other, and resulted in a firearm that could not be 'modified' with simply filing down a bit of metal somewhere. Usually parts of the receiver were wider than necessary, meaning you'd have to add metal, not remove it. Bolt was shortened. Tang removed from the hammer. Bolt carrier shortened.

everything necessary to maintain the proper timing of a full-auto setup was removed, by most manufacturers. Those that didn't were generally slapped, fined, or shut down by the BATFE, after the 1986 GOPA law was passed.

Mere possession of a kit, if one existed, would be a 10 year, $100,000 felony. No firearm need be present. Just the parts. The parts themselves constitute 'a machine gun' in the eyes of the law, and the BATFE.
