Embattled GOP Rep. Tim Murphy to retire
Source: Politico
Rep. Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania announced Wednesday that he will retire at the end of his term, after allegations that the married lawmaker, who opposes abortion rights, asked his mistress to terminate a pregnancy.
Murphy admitted several weeks ago to an affair with forensic psychologist Shannon Edwards news that came to light during the womans divorce proceedings with her husband.
"After discussions with my family and staff, I have come to the decision that I will not seek reelection to Congress at the end of my current term," Murphy said in his statement. "I plan to spend my remaining months in office continuing my work as the national leader on mental health care reform, as well as issues affecting working families in southwestern Pennsylvania."
Murphy added: "In the coming weeks I will take personal time to seek help as my family and I continue to work through our personal difficulties and seek healing. I ask you to respect our privacy during this time.

(218 posts)There's been a serious "Race to Replace" Murphy by several Indivisible groups. Now there are 3 qualified candidates. Pam Iovino, a former Navy Captain and Undersecretary for the VA. She's very good, very poised and well spoken. Mike Crossey a former Teacher's Union President as well as having held significant local positions. Then there's Dr. Bob Solomon, a "Bernie" guy who is fierce for single payer. So, a good selection.
This is a gerrymandered district favoring Republicans. With work, one of these candidates might make it.

(32,739 posts)... to the rightwing a-holes who engineered it all. We have to end gerrymandering in Pennsylvania, before the next election.
These folks are working very hard to end gerrymandering in PA -

It's an independent group, not related to any political party. All they want to do is end the unfairness of gerrymandered congressional districts. The plan is to redraw the districts evenly/fairly after the next census in 2020.
The Supreme Court might give us some help if they rule favorably on the Wisconsin gerrymandering case.
(Let's hope!)

(11,175 posts)That's the Partisan Voting Index and it shows that, in the two most recent Presidential elections, the district averaged 11 percentage points more Republican than did the nation as a whole.
Take the stench that Murphy leaves behind plus a hypothetical Democratic wave plus coal miners in the district noticing that Trump has not miraculously revived the industry... not completely hopeless, but the DCCC will probably find juicier targets elsewhere, and not spend heavily on this district.

(15,290 posts)Dems haven't seriously contested it because Murphy had it and held it for so long. The power of incumbency and the amount of voter inertia to be overcome. But now that it's an open seat, it will be competitive. Dems have 3 pretty good candidates on board. I don't know who the GOP might put up, perhaps someone like state sen like Barlotta, who, iirc, represents at least part of this district. State rep Jim Christiana also reps parts of this district. He'd be a good GOP candidate, but he's term limited himself and is retiring from the state legislature.

(2,656 posts)I am not from PA-18, but it is the same story in my Western PA district. The well funded Rethug came out on top because of big funding and negative ads provided by his party. Right-wing hate radio also remains a factor. Added to that is the social media targeting of limited-issue voters. Of those voters, many can be said to "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment."

Sound familiar?
Good riddance to Tim Murphy.

(63,221 posts)Obviously they play the "fake news" card first, because they're idiot fuckheads.
Next they claim that it was some kind of honeytrap scheme hatched by Democrats--a nefarious plot to bring down a good man. They think this because they're idiot fuckheads.
Then they say that nobody's perfect, and they like him because he still represents their values. That's because they're idiot fuckheads.
