Exclusive: Mueller's team met with Russia dossier author
Source: CNN
Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigators met this past summer with the former British spy whose dossier on alleged Russian efforts to aid the Trump campaign spawned months of investigations that have hobbled the Trump administration, according to two people familiar with the matter.
Information from Christopher Steele, a former MI-6 officer, could help investigators determine whether contacts between people associated with the Trump campaign and suspected Russian operatives broke any laws.
CNN has learned that the FBI and the US intelligence community last year took the Steele dossier more seriously than the agencies have publicly acknowledged. James Clapper, then the director of national intelligence, said in a January 2017 statement that the intelligence community had "not made any judgment that the information in this document is reliable."
The intelligence agencies, particularly the CIA, and the FBI took Steele's research seriously enough that they kept it out of a publicly-released January report on Russian meddling in the election in order to not divulge which parts of the dossier they had corroborated and how.

(32,736 posts)It was viewed and discussed by Obama and his staff, Mitch McConnell, Diane Feinstein, Nancy Pelosi and several high-ranking Senators. This report has been under wraps for over a year now and only rumors have slowly leaked to the public.
When we finally do see the whole report it's going to be a deal-breaker and they know it. Trump would have never won the election, and yet they sat on it. It makes me sick just to think about it.

(1,180 posts)When Sens Warner & Burr were out there saying Steele wasnt responding to their requests for an interview. Mueller had him already, and probably worked out a deal with Steele to have him be exclusive to his Investigation.

(81,443 posts)I'd hate to have a wobbling republi-CON with a, "I gotta protect my president cuz I want my tax cut" or "I gotta protect my president because we're supposed to own the White House and we finally do" agenda, "interviewing" Steele. It wouldn't be trustworthy.

(32,736 posts)He wrote this report as part of his job, keeping tabs on Putin and his buddies in Moscow. He wasn't spying on Trump's people or any Americans, but he stumbled into them while spying on the Russians. This info was shared with the CIA, FBI and a couple other law enforcement agencies over a year ago, while Trump was still campaigning.
Here's the thing: it wasn't just the British that found out about it. The Israeli spies also had their info that corroborated this Steele report. It's been rumored that German spies also had the same info, maybe others too.
They didn't keep it to themselves, they told the FBI and CIA what everything they knew!!!
I guess that's what good allies are supposed to do.
