Body of U.S. service member recovered in Niger, raising ambush death toll to four

Source: Washington Post

By Alex Horton October 6 at 4:24 PM

The Pentagon said Friday that the body of a U.S. service member has been recovered in Niger following a militant ambush near the Mali border Wednesday, raising the American death toll to four.

It was not immediately clear how the service member became separated from the unit, precisely when the body was recovered, or if the service member had fallen into enemy hands.

U.S. and Nigerien troops were conducting a reconnaissance patrol when they encountered dozens of heavily armed militants riding in pickup trucks. A pair of French Mirage fighter jets and other aircraft were scrambled following the attack, presumably to hunt for the missing U.S. service member and provide support for ground units.

On Friday, U.S. officials identified the fallen soldiers as Staff Sgt. Bryan Black, 35, of Puyallup, Wash.; Staff Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson, 39, of Springboro, Ohio; and Staff Sgt. Dustin Wright, 29 of Lyons, Ga. All were assigned to the Army’s 3rd Special Forces Group, which is based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

Where our SOF units, primarily GBs, help allied nations as they attempt to stunt the growth of AQIS, among others, in that area. Down south you've got anti-Boko Haram efforts and partnerships with Tchad (which just made the new travel ban list) and Nigeria.

It's a decent mission but the risk is higher, in some ways, than those of us who grew up in Afghanistan and Iraq are used to. Medical support, air support etc... are all hours and not minutes away sometimes.

And they go out in the field with their trainees to mentor and evaluate them.
Been going on since JFK formed the Green Berets.

Even Nigerien troops would be safer if "training" wasN'T 1940s 'recon' training.

They should be trained with camera drones & stationary road cams near their few main roads.
