Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) pushed back on comments made by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) indicating that the top Senate Republican would like to eliminate the last tool Democrats have to block President Trumps judicial nominees.
The Senate has fewer and fewer mechanisms that create bipartisanship and bring people to an agreement. The blue slips are one of them, Schumer said Wednesday in a statement, referring to the Senate tradition that a judicial nominee not move forward until both home state senators return the so-called blue slip approving their nomination.
Its just a shame that Senator McConnell is willing to abandon it for circuit court judges. We hope that [Judiciary] Chairman [Chuck] Grassley, who has always believed in the traditions of the Senate, will resist Senator McConnells request, Schumers statement continued.
In an interview with the Weekly Standard published earlier Wednesday, McConnell said that Republicans going forward will treat blue slips as simply notification of how youre going to vote, not as an opportunity to blackball.

Mitch McConnell should be fucking IMPEACHED and for all of you that voted for him in Kentucky, just imagine for one minute what the sexual predator is going to do to you in the court at the federal level, you think you live in shit now, your are and everyone else is going to get fucked, and if you don't think so.......................think of your health care, voting all it takes is one judge in your state sending it up the chain and giving it to John Roberts

(4,033 posts)Somehow I seem to end up in red states. Except for my time in California I have lived in AZ, TX, OH, MO, and KY. I've been in KY for 18 of the last 20 years (with a 2 year hiatus to MO in the middle). In all that time, I think I can count the number of GOP I have voted for on one thumb (and that was an aberration when I was young and foolish).
Not all KY residents are rednecks and, like most areas, the urban areas are much more Progressive than the rural areas. Unfortunately, the Southern states tend to have larger rural populations than the Northern states. So, don't think that everyone in KY votes for the turtle. And bear in mind that at the state level, up until the last election, KY had a (D) Gov, Lt. Gov, and SecState.

Btw, there are a few rural Liberal Kentucky DUers here - my friend Bayard included.

(4,033 posts)Just as there are redneck Trumpinistas in urban areas. Just that rural areas tend to vote GOP and urban areas tend to vote Dem.

Trueblue Texan
(2,445 posts)I'm a native Texan and a true blue democrat. I just hate it when it's automatically assumed I'm a right winger because I live in Texas. In my lifetime I've only voted for one Republican and that was when I was too young and dumb to know better. I'm still ashamed of it, but I am proud to be a liberal Democrat and I get pissed off and defensive when someone assumes I'm a Rethug or a bible thumper just because I live in Texas. There are a lot of liberals in Texas, but we never get any credit for keeping our state from turning more red. Sometimes I would just love to leave Texas and go live in Seattle near my daughter. But their waters are too cold and I don't want to be like a rat abandoning ship.I work in healthcare with the elderly. My state needs my voice and my vote. Why don't some of you libs on DU come on down here and help me get that moron Ted Cruz out of office?

(7,188 posts)"Its ultimately up to Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the Judiciary Committees chairman, to decide whether to honor blue slips as he schedules hearings for Trumps court picks. So far, he has, and Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), the panels former chairman, told HuffPost in June that Grassley gave him his word he would keep the rule."
