Ryan urges ATF to fix 'bump stock' gun loophole

Source: The Hill

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said Wednesday the Trump administration should move quickly to ban a device used in the Las Vegas mass shooting that allows semi-automatic weapons fire more rapidly.

“We think the regulatory fix is the smartest, quickest fix, and I’d frankly like to know how it happened in the first place,” Ryan said at a news conference in the Capitol.

Democrats and a handful of Republicans are calling on Congress to pass legislation to ban the devices, known as “bump stocks.” But most Republicans, including Ryan, prefer the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to close the bump-stock loophole and change the regulation.

Police say the suspected Las Vegas gunman, Stephen Paddock, had equipped a dozen of his weapons with bump stocks. The worst shooting in modern U.S. history left 58 people dead and 500 more injured.
In 2010, a company that manufactures bump stocks asked the Obama administration to rule whether the device was subject to the 1986 gun law that banned machine guns and other firearms devices. The ATF ruled that bump stocks were legal.

Hey Ryan, your about two weeks to late, or haven't you been keeping up with your responsibility to regulate the only item in Constitution the second amendment which is a job description, your suppose to uphold, but apparently there are two groups that uphold and buy you off, every election cycle, and you do not uphold the second amendment to be regulated.

ATF fix would only ban the use of such item, it will not outlaw possession and ownership of the items. U reckon the shooter would have any worries abt a ATF fine for using one?

Bump stocks are just the tip of the iceberg. They know we have the popular support to pass some laws. I hope our side has got some people working on legislation that is well researched and won't be defeated easily.

There are a lot of those bump stocks out there, and I'm sure a lot more were sold after the Las Vegas shootings, because people know that those stocks need to be regulated.

The ATF would have already banned them if they could. The problem is the device complies with the law as written. The law must be changed.

But Ryan knows the cowardly GOP, owned by the NRA, won't do it.

So far the republican House and Senate have ZERO legislative accomplishment this year. Maybe Ryan want to keep that streak intact. Do nothing leadership and a do nothing congress are really something for Ryan and McConnell to be proud of.
