Jeff Sessions wilts under grilling by Al Franken on Russia contacts

Source: Raw Story

The Minnesota Democrat asked Sessions to explain why he continued walking back his denial of contacts with Russia during the campaign, and the attorney general sputtered.

First it was, I did not have communications with the Russians,' Franken said. Which was not true. Then it was, I never met with any Russians to discuss any political campaign, which may or may not be true. Now its, I did not discuss interference in the campaign, which further narrows your initial blanket denial about meeting with the Russians. Since you have qualified your denial to say that you did not discuss issues of the campaign with Russians, what in your view constitutes issues of the campaign?

Sessions proceeded to move the goalposts again.

Well, lets say this without hesitation that I conducted no improper discussions with Russians at any time regarding the campaign or any other item facing this country, Sessions said.

10. Argument in the Alternative
Wed Oct 18, 2017, 03:19 PM
Oct 2017

Originating in the legal profession, argument in the alternative is a strategy in which a lawyer advances several competing (and possibly mutually exclusive) arguments in order to pre-empt objections by his adversary, with the goal of showing that regardless of interpretation there is no reasonable conclusion other than the advocate's.

Bart Simpson's classic "I didn't do it, no one saw me do it, you can't prove anything!" could be considered a somewhat humorous example. In a more serious example, a lawyer might argue, not only that his client was elsewhere when a murder or other crime took place, but also that even if he had been on the scene, he would have had no way of accessing the alleged murder weapon. In this way, the lawyer attacks several premises of the prosecution's argument at once. The secondary line of reasoning might be presented to persuade a sub-audience who would not otherwise agree with the primary argument.

what's proper or not? Evidently he doesn't even know when he is perjuring himself. Perjury is illegal, jeff beau, when you are under oath to speak the truth.
