Manafort's lawyers say he isn't a flight risk: He's not 'Jason Bourne'

Lawyers representing former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort pushed back on a U.S. District Court Judge's claim that Manafort was a flight risk after he was charged with illegal foreign lobbying, bank fraud and tax evasion, offering on Saturday to post $12.5 million-worth of assets as bond to be released from house arrest.
Manafort's attorneys argued in a motion filed on Saturday that his past business travel does not mean make him a flight risk in the future.
"While some reports have painted this as though Mr. Manafort is akin to a 68-year-old 'Jason Bourne' character, the facts are much more mundane," his lawyers wrote referencing the spy thriller Bourne Identity films.
"Mr. Manafort has been providing consulting services for international clients for many years and no one disputes this fact. It would be odd, indeed, if he did not frequently travel, both domestically and abroad, given his clientele and the nature of his business," the filing continues. "Simply put, ones frequent flyer status should not be over-emphasized to show a potential risk of flight when a persons job requires extensive travel."

(10,900 posts)Close enough. Flight risk.
Slap that tracker on his ankle.
What a terrible analogy considering Manafort actually thinks himself as a modern-day international man of mystery. His lawyers are the punchline of this joke defense.

(1,427 posts)by the way I love Kevin Spacey as an actor - hope he gets his sh*t together. Least so far he's fumbled more than scored (unlike Weinstein - whose moves I love but whose actions are gross).

(52,227 posts)That's actually their argument!
There's only "risk" in uncertain events, and manafort is always flying so it's not very uncertain. No risk, it's practically guaranteed!

Im sure Russia can give him a new passport.

(19,201 posts)Or at least it had better be. No, he's not like a Jason Bourne character. He's more of a Benedict Arnold character, and if they don't think he's a flight risk they're out of their fucking minds.
Like 'leftofcool' wrote above, "give him two trackers, one for each ankle". Manafort isn't beyond hacking one foot off just so he could spend the rest of his life in some cushy Russian dacha, instead of rotting in prison. "The Donald" cut off reporters questions yesterday when asked if he'd pardon Manafort. Manafort's bosom pal hasn't committed to pardoning him yet, so he'll run like a scalded dog the first chance he gets.
