Mueller Has Enough Evidence to Bring Charges in Flynn Investigation
by JULIA AINSLEY, CAROL E. LEE and KEN DILANIAN
WASHINGTON Federal investigators have gathered enough evidence to bring charges in their investigation of President Donald Trump's former national security adviser and his son as part of the probe into Russia's intervention in the 2016 election, according to multiple sources familiar with the investigation.
Michael T. Flynn, who was fired after just 24 days on the job, was one of the first Trump associates to come under scrutiny in the federal probe now led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign.
Mueller is applying renewed pressure on Flynn following his indictment of Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, three sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News.

WASHINGTON President Trump asked the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, to shut down the federal investigation into Mr. Trumps former national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, in an Oval Office meeting in February, according to a memo Mr. Comey wrote shortly after the meeting.
I hope you can let this go, the president told Mr. Comey, according to the memo.
The documentation of Mr. Trumps request is the clearest evidence that the president has tried to directly influence the Justice Department and F.B.I. investigation into links between Mr. Trumps associates and Russia. Late Tuesday, Representative Jason Chaffetz, the Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, demanded that the F.B.I. turn over all memoranda, notes, summaries and recordings of discussions between Mr. Trump and Mr. Comey.

WASHINGTON Michael T. Flynn, the former national security adviser, has offered to be interviewed by House and Senate investigators who are examining the Trump campaigns ties to Russia in exchange for immunity from prosecution, according to his lawyer and a congressional official.
But the congressional official said investigators were unwilling to broker a deal with Mr. Flynn who resigned last month for misleading White House officials about his contacts with Russias ambassador to the United States until they are further along in their inquiries and they better understand what information Mr. Flynn might offer as part of a deal.
In a statement on Thursday evening, Mr. Flynns lawyer confirmed discussions with the House and Senate intelligence committees about possible testimony by his client. The lawyer, Robert Kelner, did not provide specifics about the terms under which Mr. Flynn would testify, but said that no reasonable person, who has the benefit of advice from counsel, would submit to questioning in such a highly politicized, witch-hunt environment without assurances against unfair prosecution.
General Flynn certainly has a story to tell, and he very much wants to tell it, should circumstances permit, the statement said. The Wall Street Journal reported Mr. Flynns offer to testify.

Mueller was appointed Special Counsel a couple months later (May), so I expect Flynn was the low-hanging fruit who was the first targeted but they waited in order to put on pressure.

https://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/white-house-claims-flynns-job-was-to-make-coffee-when-papadopoulos-was-busy
Sometimes, we would ask for coffee and George was otherwise occupied, the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said. At that point, Michael Flynn would step in and make that coffee.
When asked what role Flynns son, Michael G. Flynn, played in the campaign, Sanders indicated that he, too, was involved in coffee-making to the exclusion of all other responsibilities.
There were many times when the two Flynns would make coffee together, she said. The father would actually make the coffee, and the son would add the creamer, sweetener, and whatnot.
Sanders said that, in the weeks to come, the White House is likely to release the names of additional campaign staffers whose roles were limited to the preparation of coffee beverages, and that such names might include Jared Kushner and Donald Trump, Jr.

(51,557 posts)The FBI told Manafort when they were searching his condo that he should expect to be indicted; it was Manafort's people who leaked that. I imagine the FBI issued a similar heads up to Flynn and Flynn Jr. recently, and it is the Flynn camp leaking it.
The Flynn camp is probably trying to figure out if Trump would pardon both Flynn and Flynn Jr., so they can decide whether to flip or not. By leaking this, they may get a reassuring message from Trump, like the "stay strong" message he sent Flynn Sr. a while back. Trump has yet to send such a message about Flynn Jr., that I am aware of, so I imagine the Flynn camp is particularly nervous about Flynn Jr.
