Trump says 'hundreds more' might have died in Texas shooting if gun laws were tougher

SEOUL President Trump on Tuesday asserted that tougher gun laws would not have stopped the mass shooting in Sutherland Springs, Tex., last weekend and in fact hundreds more would have died had another man not been able to neutralize the alleged killer with a gun of his own.
Asked during a news conference here whether he would entertain extreme vetting on guns, Trump appeared irritated by the question and suggested it was not appropriate to talk about in the heart of South Korea.
He then answered by saying if we did what you are suggesting it would have made no difference three days ago. Devin Patrick Kelley opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle, killing 26 people in a church. Another man, Stephen Willeford, later grabbed his own gun and exchanged fire with Kelley outside the church. Police found Kelley dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but authorities said Willeford helped stop Kelley and called him a hero."
Trump referred to Willeford as a brave man and said if he had not had a gun, instead of having 26 dead, you would have had hundreds more dead.
Its not going to help.

(22,651 posts)he knew another person was dead. He said he was scared to death, think he had his hunting rifle out and shot (from distance) the man twice as he entered his truck.
Man managed to drive away, I guess he was going after the family member(s) he didn't find at the church. Police said he suicided a couple miles away.
A witness inside the church hid under a pew after she was shot, said the killer reloaded mags a couple times, walked up and down the pews shooting more people.
Stephen Willeford is a Hero-but even if every American is armed (& brave enough to try to slay a shooter next door), it's not going to prevent the next mass murder/suicide person or the next or the next or the next.
Because America doesn't just have a gun problem- America has a major, major suicide problem.

(7,218 posts)From NPR: "Willeford says his daughter alerted him to what sounded like shots being fired at the nearby First Baptist Church. That's when he said he got his rifle out of his safe."
So he wasn't in the church, nor was he in the church parking lot where could have retrieved his rifle from the truck of his car had he stored it there. He was merely living nearby.
The killing inside the church was already over and Devin Kelly was fleeing by the time Kelly was engaged by Willeford. And there weren't "hundreds" more in the church (a church shot up so badly that the pastor doesn't think the actual physical building can ever be repaired), nor in the area who could have been targets.
This is just more of the shit that constantly dribbles down from Trump's tiny brain then mouth-shat out to the world.
And he's the president of the United States.

(11,588 posts)I would imagine the Church was the busiest location, too, so just where would these "hundreds more" have come from that morning if the shooter hadn't been shot at by the "hero" who supposedly helped stop the gunman after he was finished shooting and already leaving?
I am not trying to say that Willeford was not a brave man, but fail to see how he stopped hundreds more from being killed in the good-guy-with-a-gun mythology.
