(Reuters) - Donald Trumps nominee to head the Department of Homeland Security told a U.S. Senate committee on Wednesday there was no need to build a wall on the Mexican border from sea to shining sea in remarks that contrasted with the presidents campaign pledge.
Kirstjen Nielsen repeated at her confirmation hearing what her predecessor, John Kelly, had said about the project. Kelly, Nielsens former boss, stepped down as head of the department this year to be Trumps chief of staff. Building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border was one of Trumps central campaign promises but so far only prototypes have been built as funding remains in question.
Nielsen, 45, served as Kellys deputy in the White House and before that as his chief of staff when he was secretary of homeland security in the opening months of Trumps presidency.
In response to questions from senators on the Homeland Security Committee, Nielsen said she would work with state and local actors on the ground to find the best solutions for border security, including increasing the use of technology such as unmanned surveillance aircraft.

(2,580 posts)will consist of 6 foot long sections of barrier interspersed with 6 foot long spaces. Very innovative and studies show it would be easily as effective as a full wall in deterring unwanted border traffic.

Works just as well and brings 100% savings over all other plans.

(37,648 posts)Trump has learned that it's not possible, realistically, to build a wall all the way across...across raging rivers and rocky areas and such. So this guy's job is to give Trump an out from part of his promise.

(4,268 posts)just to get confirmed. Then her true colors will show just like with John Kelly.
From what I've been reading, sounds like she might be even more ruthless than Kelley against immigrants.
Fuck her.

(4,267 posts)Even if they could build such a thing, which I don't personally believe they could, people would find a way around, under, or through it. To be a nerd and quote Star Trek, there's never been a security measure a smart man couldn't overcome.
As I said, if going by the title as a relatively accurate quote, that leaves room for a partial wall. That's even more pointless. What do you do when something's just directly in front of you? You walk around it!
Border security is important and I don't mind the use of drones and reasonable measures to keep watch like that, myself. I just hope the wall is dropped and one more piece of nonsense from the campaign is out of the way.

(18,665 posts)All Trump needs is enough to take a picture to show the morans who support him. As long as it's a "beautiful" wall and there are "sensors both above and below the wall" they'll be happy. hahaha
Meanwhile, workers at Mar a Largo can walk right around it and clock in as usual.
