Poll: Biden leads Trump in prospective 2020 matchup

Source: Politico

By STEVEN SHEPARD 11/15/2017 05:48 AM EST

Former Vice President Joe Biden would lead President Donald Trump in a 2020 general election, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll.

Only 35 percent of voters would choose to reelect Trump in 2020, the poll shows — substantially fewer than the 46 percent who would vote instead for Biden, who said Monday that he is “not closing the door” on a third attempt at the presidency in 2020. One in 5 voters are undecided.

Biden’s 11-point margin is actually smaller than the poll’s previous question, in which voters are asked whether they will vote to reelect Trump, or for a generic Democrat. The generic Democrat leads Trump, 48 percent to 34 percent, the poll shows.

“Former Vice President Joe Biden has the upper hand in a hypothetical matchup against President Donald Trump, but he underperforms compared with a generic Democrat,” said Kyle Dropp, Morning Consult’s co-founder and chief research officer. “Notably, 86% of Democrats say they would vote for a generic Democrat over Trump, but only 78% of Democrats say they prefer Biden over Trump.” Independent voters tilt away from the incumbent: 41 percent would vote for Biden, and 26 percent for Trump.

Poll: Voters think Trump will benefit from tax plan

By STEVEN SHEPARD 11/15/2017 05:49 AM EST

Majorities of voters think President Donald Trump and the company he built will benefit from proposed changes to the tax code, but fewer than three in 10 expect those changes to help them. And voters still want to see Trump’s tax returns before a tax bill moves forward.

That’s according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll, conducted last week, that also shows opposition to the plan continuing to increase modestly among voters familiar with it, even though a plurality support the proposal.

Among those voters who have heard at least something about Republicans’ plan to change the tax code, 47 percent of voters support it and 40 percent oppose it. Support for the plan increased 2 percentage points from last week, when 45 percent of those familiar with the plan backed it. But opposition increased 4 points, up from 36 percent last week.

Voters expect that Trump will benefit personally from the changes, if enacted. Fully 56 percent of voters think the president will benefit, while only 16 percent don’t think he will. More than a quarter, 27 percent, aren’t sure.

A well known, well respected, stable long time public servant.
Understands and respects Americans, the government, our traditions.

Will be able to heal and rebuild.

I don't think people are going to want to take a chance on an unknown

the republican primaries, and I think he has created a lot of disfavor in his own party, and he has a good chance of not winning the nomination.

I also believe that Biden is not the best candidate the Democrats have to offer. He is a mixed bag. His behavior during the Clarence Thomas hearings a lot of folks have not forgotten.

Better to focus on 2018 at this time

Colbert appearance. He was promoting his new book but that's OK. He has a great story. And he has known true suffering, losing his first wife and baby daughter in a tragic accident and then losing his son Beau. He was a great VP for Obama. Looking at what we have now, I guess, makes us long for what we had. Like the old song goes "You don't know what you've got til it's gone..."

We've got some damn good women who would be great. Kamala Harris is one and so is Amy Klobuchar (sp.?). Harris came out really strong in the Senate hearings the other day. Not perfect but I see her strong points.

De Blasio had an impressive win in NYC. I hate to say this but his height is impressive and some people won't vote for a short guy. Stupid...

on our democracy by James Comey. She has described him as a man of integrity, who took an action that she disagreed with. I completely reject that interpretation.

I also don't like Blunt/Klobuchar, a bill designed to pressure third world countries to open their doors to American adoption.

I am not sure how tall Tom Steyer is. I am liking him a lot lately and would be interested in supporting him if he ran for president. I also like Jay Inslee, the governor of Washington. He is 6'3".
