British PM May issues rare rebuke of Trump for retweeting anti-Muslim videos

Source: NBC

The British government delivered a rare rebuke of President Donald Trump Wednesday for retweeting inflammatory anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant videos originally shared by a far-right U.K. political group.

Trump shared the three videos posted by Jayda Fransen, deputy leader of the fringe group Britain First, which opposes what it calls the "Islamization" of Britain and has engaged in a series of stunts, including occupying mosques.

"It is wrong for the president to have done this," Prime Minister Theresa May said in a statement.

The first video Trump shared claimed to show a Muslim migrant beating up a Dutch boy on crutches. The second was captioned “Muslim destroys a statute of Virgin Mary,” and the third read “Islamist mob pushes teenage boy off roof and beats him to death!”

(snip)
Trump, from the beginning, throughout his campaign and since the election, has used hatred and bigotry to mobilise support.
--
So what now? How do we respond to the most powerful man in the world becoming a purveyor of hate? Perhaps, in the UK, Trump brings opportunities that we should seize on. A recent world study by Pew found people united in disavowal of the president – for instance 75% of the British public had no confidence in Trump to do the right thing in world affairs, 89% saw him as arrogant and 69% saw him as dangerous. Even less than half of Ukip voters trusted him to do the right thing in global affairs.
--
We should use the fact that Trump has become the poster-child for bigotry to our advantage. He may try to mobilise for the haters. But in fact he’s the best recruiting sergeant for those of us who wish to build a consensus around British values of tolerance and decency.
