Gutierrez eyes 2020 presidential run

Source: Politico

Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.), who announced Tuesday that he will not seek reelection to Congress, is instead pursuing another move: testing the presidential waters.

Gutiérrez joins a growing field of Democrats — including more than a half-dozen House members — who are looking at a 2020 run.

"I will be reaching out to people across the country. I am going to take the steps to guarantee (Federal Election Commission) regulations and rules about campaign financing, first and foremost, make sure I'm following the law, " Gutiérrez told POLITICO on Wednesday when asked whether he is entertaining a presidential bid.

"This is what I can tell you — anybody really wanted to listen to me — look, I'm not retiring, I'm not retiring. I'm going to sit down with Soraida (Gutiérrez’s wife), and we're going to figure it out. I want to build something, I want to build something national."

I'm thinking a Safe-D House seat in Chicago is not the place to launch a national campaign...

A House member, by definition has a smaller constituency than a Senator or a Governor. A House member in a safe district has a more homogeneous constituency than one in a competitive district. I'm looking for a candidate who can win a national General Election, some someone who agrees with me on everything.

Ever see him speak in person? Participate in one of his town halls? He's genuine, sincere and passionate.

Cares about Puerto Rico greatly. He allows his genuine emotions show. Puerto Rico needs all of the help and attention it can get and fully deserves.

The only exception in recent memory is Dwight Eisenhower. But I suppose there's a first time for everything.

I do think the last year he's been energized, and it has been needed--desperately! I honestly expect to see a strong turnout from the Hispanic population in this next Presidential contest (Puerto Rico lost quite a few people to the mainland, and Lord knows the Latino voters are paying attention!) Think Florida, Texas, California, New York, Illinois--and you are also looking at states with the highest percentages of Hispanic voters--and it represents almost 40% of voters, period. This might be a really good year for a Hispanic Dem
to run.

I also want to say I disagree with the naysayers who are bemoaning his decision to endorse Garcia as his replacement. Garcia has a good solid network already in place. I'd certainly be inclined to support them both!

Just my two cents from downstate.

That said, he's got a lot of fight and energy to get the job done; and, he's on the right side important issues -- IMHO.
