Vice President Mike Pence reportedly told the Republican National Committee (RNC) that he could replace President Trump on the ballot after the "Access Hollywood" tape surfaced last year.
The Atlantic reported that Pence made clear to the RNC that he could assume the position of the party's nominee. At the time, there was reportedly talk about making Pence the nominee and former secretary of State Condoleezza Rice his running mate.
At a meeting with Trump's top advisers after the tape surfaced, former RNC chairman Reince Priebus told Trump that Pence and Rice were "ready to step in," The Atlantic reported

An aide to Pence, however, said that the vice president never told the RNC he could step in.

(59,504 posts)I am not surprised that there would be talk in the RNC when the tape first came out. I know that everyone I knew thought that this was a campaign ended for Trump - expecting his numbers to sink into the 20s or 30s.
What it ignores is that Trump would NEVER step down peacefully from the nomination he won and there would be nothing they could offer him to do so. I do not think there is any way to force the nominee for President out.
The Brazile claim made less sense - there were no real long term health problems and at that point in time, Clinton was ahead in all the polling - whether state based (and aggregated to estimate the Electoral Congress) or the national poll. I know that pushing Clinton out would have destroyed our 2016 campaign. It would be completely not democratic and would reek of back room deals.
Years ago, I often tried to understand Republican voters by trying to create the mirror image situation and tried to consider what the Democrats would do. In recent years, that has not worked at all, but I think in this case it might. I think people still allied with Trump would have erupted in anger and many might have not voted, voted third party or would have written in Trump.

(32,645 posts)If Pence was part of the Russian collusion he would have known that the Access Hollywood tape didn't matter one bit. Putin had no interest in Pence running for POTUS, it had to be Trump or he would look elsewhere.
You'd think that Mike Flynn would have clued him in.
Just sayin'
