Disney and Twenty-First Century Fox are closing in on a deal, and it could come as soon as next week, according to sources familiar with the matter.
CNBC has been reporting that Disney has held talks with the Rupert Murdoch-controlled media company to acquire its studio and television production assets, leaving Fox with its news and sports assets. Fox is also talking with CNBC parent company Comcast, but the talks with Disney have progressed more significantly.
The deal contemplates the sale of Fox's Nat Geo, Star, regional sports networks, movie studios and stakes in Sky and Hulu, among other properties. What would remain at Fox includes its news and business news divisions, broadcast network and Fox sports.
The enterprise value of the Fox assets in the Disney deal is seen as above $60 billion, according to sources. Current Fox shareholders would get one share of the Fox company that remains after the movie and television assets are sold plus shares of Disney in a fixed exchange ratio.

(6,399 posts)There are definitely issues to be had with this deal and I don't discount that.
But with the changes in technology, Fox in its non-news media properties are just struggling because they can't grow to scale with what's happening.
And my geek side wants to get more Marvel properties under the same house once again as well as the Star Wars franchise. Small things in the grand scheme of things, but they're there. It's pure upside for Disney, esp. since the bulk of what Fox does would likely stand on its own similar to Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm as another "fiefdom"

(12,157 posts)I really don't watch anything on our FOX affiliate station since they did away with Rosewood. I loved that show and the whole family. That's the way it is with me- don't get me liking your favorite show because once I do, it's history.

Good, it will unite the Xmen with marvel movies, so now we can have Iron Man and Wolvie.

Can we please get a BluRay release of the original theatrical Star Wars trilogy (without the CGI "enhancements" ?

(34,661 posts)a Corporate Salvage Operation. Murdoch has taken a real financial hit this past year, and the ratings of his entertainment segment has taken a major hit due to Cord Cutting and lousy programing. You can do just so many Reality type Crap.
Fox Sports Contract is Murdoch's cash cow.

(60,010 posts)College years. Sharing a house with 3 other students.
We go prepped for this much anticipated film debut, at one of Seattle's fine old theaters.
We all smoked a bowl, made pot brownies, everyone very enthused.
30 minute wait in long line. My roommate, the chief stoner and future doctor, got the munchies in line, so ate his brownie.
finally in the movie and that marvelous opening sequence on a 40 foot screen came on, and EVERYONE in the movie went
"WOWWWWWWW". I look around and realized, as others did, we were all happily baked and sharing the same state of mind.
Except for the future doctor, who fell asleep just as the movie started.
Some movies just belong in a theater.
