Elaine Chao advises women who experience sexual harassment to 'let it go'

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said Tuesday that women who have experienced sexual harassment or other misconduct in the workplace have to "let it go" in order to move on with their lives.
Chao, a member of President Trump's Cabinet and wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), said at Politico's Women Rule Summit that focusing on mistreatment after it has occurred "holds you back" professionally.
"I will fight for other women and I will stand up for other women, but, of your own, you gotta let it go," Chao said. "Because otherwise, it's too corrosive, it's too negative, and it does you a double injury because it holds you back."
She made the comments after saying she had her own "#MeToo" moment of experiencing sexual harassment in the workplace. Chao declined to identify the harasser, only noting that the person is still active in the workplace.

(9,426 posts)after an incident in the showers. He was there 3 weeks!! One of his male "aides" left his job, to take a job a few blocks away. Mitch CRIED when he announced this. REAL TEARS!! He had a very short gfirst marriage. This wife's father is a multi millionaire shipping tycoon, who deals in drug shipments. Mitch's bank account has increased BIGLY since he married her. He managed to get bills passed to help his faher-in-law (who is likely younger than Mitch!!)

(5,730 posts)mean, ugly shitbag get near her. My gfs and I had wondered. Well, he doesn't, and she doesn't.
So, it was a big increase in$$ for MM and $$ for his Father in law. It was an increase in power for her.
The drugs his Father in law deals in, legal, as in Rx, or illegal?

There is also a person name Ping May whose facebook page shows numerous photos of what may or may not be a woman dressed in hooker outfits.
Has there been a conflation between the two?

(2,434 posts)Is that the strongest language you have for someone so horrible? A whole helluva lot is wrong w/ her comment, not the least of which is that she is telling women to grin and bear it because boys will be boys. "Lay back and enjoy it honey - then move on" No other way to advance your career. God forbid, if you can't marry a turtle, you better sleep w/ one.
Yeah I'd say there's something wrong w/ her comment.

You would never have been raped at work or sexually harassed anyways.
So no one to blame but yourself.

................She made the comments after saying she had her own "#MeToo" moment of experiencing sexual harassment in the workplace. Chao declined to identify the harasser, only noting that the person is still active in the workplace.
"The person is still here and they're still around," she said. "Things change, times change, and it's not worth my while to go back and revisit those negative moments."
Chao added that experiences of misconduct in the workplace such as hers are "a dirty little secret that a lot of women have held for a long time."
The fifth annual Women Rule Summit began Tuesday and included several other speakers who touched on the "#MeToo" movement in their remarks. Chao joined fellow Trump administration official Kellyanne Conway at the event, as well as Democrats such as Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) and Rep. Jackie Speier (Calif.).

(140 posts)In my experience, speaking out about the experience has nothing to do with holding onto the experience. It is about holding the harasser responsible and calling it out.

(5,810 posts)Women would still not be allowed to own property or vote. People of African decent would be in the same boat. Few rights. Slavery. Deemed subhuman. Forced to live in housing unfit for farm animals and eat the scraps and cast offs from the masters kitchen.
It is ONLY when people stand up and make their stories a part of history that things change. Overlords dont just suddenly come to an epiphany and realize they have been treating others unfairly or in a demeaning way. People in power and influence wont stop taking advantage of others seeking jobs or promotions until those who are exploited speak up. The dark secrets of sexual harassment are everywhere but kept quiet and muffled until someone dares to come forward to expose the behavior. Nothing santitizes like the cold light of day and courage of someone sitting in the glaring lights of the media telling their horrifying story.
So Ms. Chao needs to rethink her comments. In essence, she is telling these (mostly) women to sit down in the back of the bus and quit your belly aching. Shame on her for admonishing those with courage to let it go and keep the status quo.
