Poll: Democrats hold double-digit lead in generic ballot

Source: The Hill

BY BRANDON CARTER - 12/05/17 02:53 PM EST

A new poll released Tuesday finds Democrats hold a double-digit advantage over Republicans in generic ballots for both the House and Senate.

A new Quinnipiac University poll finds 50 percent of voters would like to see Democrats win control of the House of Representatives if the 2018 midterms were held today.

Just 36 percent of voters said they would want Republicans to keep control of the House. Thirteen percent of respondents said they were unsure or didn’t provide an answer. Fifty-one percent of voters said they would like to see Democrats win control of the Senate if the election were held today. Thirty-seven percent of voters would like to see Republicans retain control of the Senate and 12 percent of voters said they were unsure or did not answer.

The poll, which comes after Senate Republicans passed a sweeping tax reform bill last week, also found that 53 percent of voters disapprove of the bill, while just 29 percent approve of it.

In every election since 1988 more Americans have voted for a Democrat than a Republican. And yet, because of gerrymandering in the house, over representation for low populace states in the senate, and an outdated electoral system for the Presidency, we have had a Republican controlled Congress and a Republican in the White House even when outvoted. Democrats begin the race far behind the starting line.

from 2008 - 2010 (where Democrats regained the House in 2006). The problem is apathy (and weak candidates with little support) during state elections, which allowed the GOP to take over governorships and state legislatures during the run-up to the 2010 census.

Many of us ignored the polls in 2010 when the repubs won big. I hope the repubs are doing the same today.

Voters tend to stick with their incumbent representatives. Even if they might be inclined to express a "throw the bums out sentiment", when it comes to their own particular bum, they'll stick with him/her.

Senate seats are somewhat easier to flip because it's a state-wide vote - more chance to pick up enough voters who are truly ready to make a switch.

But flipping the House will be nearly impossible, no matter what these generic polls say.

My dad told me this for years. He was right. It is like a "study". You can skew any results. Also, too many variables.

...Trump and Pence have been revealed as the traitors they are. There is no real disputing this anymore; everyone accepts it, at least de facto. A new "Congress" is installed. The Dems have won the popular vote for Congress, 54-45. But the new "Congress" is, nonetheless, Republican, thanks to gerrymandering and voter suppression. And they make it clear they aren't going to do a damned thing about Trump & Co. Nothing at all. The "President" is a Russian agent; everybody knows it; and the situation will be allowed to continue, because the gravy train is rolling for the 1%, and they have the Congress and the courts to ensure it continues. Does anyone think this scenario is particularly unlikely? This would be the death knell of American democracy. I don't know what should happen then. I do know--*if* this happens--that yapping here about "2020" would be the equivalent of pissing into the wind.

Keep in mind that the final bill hasn't been passed yet. And once it's passed, people won't see the changes until 2019, when they file their 2018 income tax returns.

Plus, this is the era of Citizens United, when infinite cash can corrupt our elections. There will never be a Democratic blow-out ever again, unless working people see the light and get out to vote.
