California Republicans Push to Preserve Income-Tax Deduction

Source: WSJ

WASHINGTON—Though the House and Senate have voted to repeal the deduction for state income taxes in Republican tax overhaul plans, it isn’t dead yet. California Republicans are pushing for an income-tax deduction in the final tax bill being worked out by lawmakers in a House-Senate conference committee on tax legislation. “There’s a lot of things that Californians are working on and why we said we’d move the process forward, looking to be able to make those fixes,” House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) told reporters on Tuesday.

California Republicans would like the $10,000 cap to be higher. And they want at a minimum to let taxpayers deduct $10,000 against either property or income taxes, said Rep. Mimi Walters (R., Calif.). “I am strongly in favor of making sure we have some sort of fix because I feel it’s very important to give that flexibility,” said Ms. Walters, who voted for the House bill. She said she didn’t know how much such a fix would cost and didn’t know whether she would vote for the final version of a tax package without something new.

Republicans are also debating limits on the mortgage-interest deduction. The House voted to limit the mortgage-interest deduction to loans totaling up to $500,000, down from $1 million in current law, which is also the level preserved by the Senate. Californians in expensive real-estate markets are pushing for a higher mortgage-interest deduction. All of those changes would reduce revenue and Republicans would need to find money elsewhere to make up the difference.

Mr. McCarthy doesn’t sit on the House committee that will iron out differences between the House and Senate bills, but as a leader who played a key role in assembling the Republican majority that passed the legislation to begin with, he will be pivotal behind the scenes in the days ahead.

As far as I know, he never lifts a finger for his own district - even when his fellow GOPeers have blocked wildfire aid in the past.

Too busy dialing for dollars, I imagine (and dialing for God knows what else).

And they always vote the same.

Don't pay attention to what they SAY. Look at what they DO. Look at their RECORDS. And if they have no record of doing something DECENT for human kind, don't vote for them. Promises are just words.

They SHOULD have had HEARINGS in multiple Committees and in both chambers FIRST before they had any Committee debates, markups, & votes, and final floor debates, amendments, and votes.

Here in Philly, I had to pay 3.07% PA state income tax and 3.92% city wage tax, totaling nearly 7% that came out to more than the standard deduction, so I was able to itemize that yearly.

They don't seem to understand (nor do they apparently care) that many working class & poor are RENTERS and thus any property tax deduction is moot to them, but state/local income tax deductions would be helpful.
