President Trump on Wednesday recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and announced plans to relocate the U.S. embassy there, a decision that could inflame tensions in the region and throw a wrench in potential peace negotiations.

"I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel," Trump said during a speech in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House.

Trump framed the decision as a way to put his own stamp on one of history’s oldest conflicts.

“The record is in: after more than two decades of waivers, we are no closer to a lasting peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians,” the president said. “It would be folly to assume that repeating the exact same formula would now produce a different or better result."

U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that "it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel," calling the move "a long overdue step to advance the peace process" between Israel and the Palestinians. 

He said recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital is not only a "necessary condition for achieving peace," but also "in the best interests of the United States of America."

Trump also said that the U.S. would support a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict if agreed upon by both sides. 

"We are not taking a position of any final status issues, including the specific boundaries of the Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem or the resolution of contested borders. Those questions are up to the parties involved," Trump said.

Except for pissing off DC area real estate agents and people who maintain Acela trains, moving the capital of the USA elsewhere isn't an issue that will have nut cases around the world blowing up people because of it. This, on the other hand, will.

For those of us who live and work in countries with large populations of unemployed or underemployed Arab youth, this is not exactly an announcement that one could call "security-enhancing," not that Republicans care what happens in "furrin countries."
