ECUADORAN President Rafael Correa said he expects to respond to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange's application for political asylum some time this week.
"Hopefully this week we will be able to make a statement on the matter," the leftist leader said in an interview with public broadcaster ECTV ...
"We expect to have a meeting no later than Wednesday," Correa said, referring to his diplomats in London.

IMO Ecuador merely intends to sit on its hands in this matter
But government officials have declined to say whether he will announce a decision at that time ...
"That's a matter between him and Julian Assange," Senator Carr told AAP on Tuesday. "I'd just say again - if America were interested in Julian Assange they could have sought his extradition from the UK at any time in the last two years.

Roughly speaking, Correa sure does hope he can make a decision this week, and it sure would be great if he could pull together a Wednesday meeting of the diplomats, but there sure is a lot to consider

QUITO, Aug 13 (Reuters) - ... "We have to review the process in Sweden," Correa said in a television interview. "We have to look at the possibility that he may be extradited to the United States, that there may be a secret court there, that he may face the death penalty.
"We expect to have a meeting on Wednesday (with Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino) and I hope to make an announcement before the end of the week."
