John Conyers III Was Arrested This Year, Accused of Stabbing His Girlfriend
Source: New York Times
WASHINGTON John Conyers III, who was endorsed by his father on Tuesday to succeed him in the House, was arrested in February after his girlfriend suffered knife cuts during an argument.
Mr. Conyers, in an interview Wednesday, tried to head off a possibly disqualifying scandal just a day after his father resigned from Congress amid multiplying allegations of sexual harassment. As issues of sexual harassment and abuse roil Washington, any violent altercation against a woman could doom his effort to take the seat that his father held since 1965.
The younger Mr. Conyers said that the couple began arguing around 3 a.m. the day after Valentines Day and that after a physical fight, police arrested him on suspicion of domestic violence.
The Los Angeles County District Attorneys Office later dropped the charges, but the girlfriend got a restraining order against Mr. Conyers, which remains in effect until March of next year, he said.

(34,195 posts)The girlfriend would not have been granted a restraining order that runs into next year
if the judge thought there was nothing to it.
As for him blaming the woman,
isn't that what abusers do?
"Hey - she started it. She got what she deserved."

(7,218 posts)Over the past few years neither party has a great history of family following family in public office*. Bush following Bush is the most glaring example. And Hillary after Bill. Jesse Jackson's son. George Romney and Mitt Romney. And, of course, Ivanka and Jared. There should be no passes given just because one is related to the incumbent. We are not a monarchy.
Conyers naming his son was out of line. Let the district voters decide.
* Nothing is ever an absolute, exceptions, of course - Robert F. Kennedy, and John Q. Adams.

(34,195 posts)Joe Kennedy III:
Son of Joseph P. Kennedy II, Grandson of Robert F. Kennedy
Continuing the tradition of Kennedys involved in politics, Joe has served as the U.S. Representative for Massachusetts' 4th congressional district since 2013.
... earned his law degree at Harvard and worked for two years in the Dominican Republic with the Peace Corps.
At the 2016 Democratic National Convention, he took centerstage to introduce speaker Elizabeth Warren, who now serves in the seat of Joe's late great-uncle, Ted Kennedy.
And following Trump's inauguration, Kennedy has become increasingly vocal in defending Planned Parenthood and battling against Republican initiatives to cut healthcare spending.

(7,218 posts)... would he still gotten that chance?
Would Ted Kennedy have had a chance as a 29-year old* who had been suspended from Harvard for cheating, and who had just passed the Mass. bar two years before, against formidable opposition in the primary and the special election, if his brother wasn't President and his brother Attorney General?
His son, Patrick, also won a seat in the House until alcohol and drugs caught up with him.
I'm just arguing you shouldn't be on 3rd base when the game starts.
* Minimum age for a Senator is 30. Ted campaigned for the office as a 29-year old, turning 30 just nine months before the special election and sworn in the day after. Don't know if that makes him the youngest Senator to have ever served, but he's in the running.

(67,782 posts)If you read the article, you'll see that the Conyers III case has been litigated and a resolution has been achieved. Not the case for Roy Moore.
And once again, John Conyers III is NOT a candidate, Roy Moore is.
I see absolutely no comparison between the two.
