WATCH: Trump calls Pearl Harbor a pretty wild scene during rambling tribute to vets

President Donald Trump on Thursday delivered a rambling tribute to World War II veterans in which he boasted of his administration’s purported efforts to build up America’s military, while simultaneously describing the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor as a “pretty wild scene.”

During Trump’s address, he told one vet that the military is being built up more powerfully than ever before, whereas the Obama administration allegedly left the military “depleted.”

“We are building up the military beyond what you ever thought,” he said. “We got depleted. You know what happened over the last, quite long period of time. Not with us. Our budget will be higher than ever before. We’re building that up again.”

Trump then paid tribute to Pearl Harbor vet George Blake, whom he described as standing “ready to repulse a feared invasion” in 1941.

He may have confused it with Animal House.

Was he still exhibiting symptoms of his stroke today?

Today would have been my father-in-law's 98th birthday. On December 8, 1941 he and his friends enlisted in the Marine Corps. Pa fought at Guadalcanal and took three bullets at Peleliu.

I'll bet those were pretty wild scenes too.

The President's use of the term, "a pretty wild scene" to describe a horrific moment in history is not only because he lacks the intellectual discipline to learn any details regarding the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

It is also because he cannot emotionally insert himself in the experiences of others. For him, the dramatic events of the bombing are essentially a scene from an action movie. He can appreciate the excitment of the story and even follow the narrative of heroism. That is because the heroic elements fit into his image of himself as a great man leading a great country.

Also, the theme of "Heroes versus Villains" is really, really easy to grasp -- especially when there are lots of explosions and you can tell the heroes from the villains because the bad guys don't look like us.

It is the concept of "personal sacrifice" that he cannot grasp. He would probably describe Washington's winter at Valley Forge as "a real bummer."

This must really resonate with his simple brain: "you can tell the heroes from the villains because the bad guys don't look like us."
