Arizona's Trent Franks Expected to Resign
Source: Roll Call
Arizona Republican Trent Franks is expected to resign from Congress, a source with knowledge told Roll Call.
The congressman did not confirm or deny any plans to resign. Franks said he expected to make a statement Thursday.
We will have a statement a little bit later, but thats all I can tell you right now, Franks told Roll Call. The statement will explain.
It is unclear exactly why Franks is stepping down, but one Arizona Republican said there had been rumors of inappropriate behavior. The Republican said the congressman had apparently been making plans to run for Senate in 2012, but abruptly canceled those plans.

(2,177 posts)This encompasses parts of Glendale, Peoria and Sun City. The way they are going after Medicare I am not sure those Sun City folks are too happy lately. Also it may have been pretty red in the past but I think things, they are a changing. At least I hope so. It used to be red, red, red. My mother long ago ran against Jan Brewer when she was in the house, just so a Dem would be on the ticket, knowing she would most likely not win, but could not stomach the thought of no one else running.

(11,029 posts)Less megachurches and more diversity. I still think it'll be an uphill climb though - I've seen several sacrificial Dems running in that district (and LaRouchies about 20-odd years ago).

The wanton and generalized accusations of media bias get a wee bit irritating at times.

Story highlights
Rep. Trent Franks is a Phoenix area congressman who is anti-abortion rights
He supports President Donald Trump and opposed GOP Sen. Jeff Flake
(CNN)Republican Arizona Rep. Trent Franks is expected to resign, multiple sources tell CNN on Thursday.
The reasons for his resignation were not immediately clear as the news broke. On Thursday evening, a group of conservative House Republicans gathered around Franks on the floor and prayed with him. Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, one of the members who huddled with Franks, told CNN that a statement is coming out shortly on the issue.
Franks, a self-styled "conservative, Reagan Republican," joined Congress in the early 2000s and has hewed conservative on a range of issues in his time there, with a particular focus on anti-abortion issues.
He supported President Donald Trump last year, even in the wake of the "Access Hollywood" tape, by saying Trump's words, while bad, did not compare to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's support of abortion rights.

(51,284 posts)The House Ethics Committee announced earlier Thursday that it will investigate Franks to determine if he engaged in "conduct that constitutes sexual harassment and/or retaliation for opposing sexual harassment."
In his statement, Franks acknowledged he made staffers "uncomfortable" and that he discussed fertility issues and surrogacy with two female staffers, but denied having ever "physically intimidated, coerced, or had, or attempted to have, any sexual contact with any member of my congressional staff."
