AARP: Congress must prevent 'sudden cut' to Medicare in 2018

Source: the hill

By Nathaniel Weixel - 12/07/17 03:53 PM EST

The AARP is urging House and Senate leaders to waive congressional rules so the Republican tax bill doesn't trigger deep cuts to Medicare.

If Republicans pass their tax bill, which would add an estimated $1 trillion to the federal deficit, congressional “pay-as-you-go” rules would require an immediate $150 billion in mandatory spending cuts to offset the impact.

"The sudden cut to Medicare provider funding in 2018 would have an immediate and lasting impact, including fewer providers participating in Medicare and reduced access to care for Medicare beneficiaries,” AARP said in a letter sent to congressional leaders Thursday.

......................

In a joint statement sent just ahead of the Senate vote on the tax bill last week, Ryan and McConnell said there is “no reason to believe that Congress would not act again to prevent a sequester, and we will work to ensure these spending cuts are prevented.”

I am not sure what they really mean by this comment. Does it mean they WILL pass the budget bill, but then LATER pass another bill to prevent a sequester??

If they touched Medicare or Social Security, it would be then of the Republican party, though they are well on their way to that end as it is, this would just cap it off!!!

Where is that news...NOT on the MSM...ratings is their priority. The Tax Scam is ours and we are making progress. The number of GOP reps in the House who represent CA alone can flip the vote. Ryan and McConnell are shoving this through and pretending it is a done deal which it isn't! They are supporting a pedophile they are so desperate for a vote. We have until Jan 1st when they need 60, instead of simple majority. CALL, call your family and friends, etc. People are sitting in the hallways of Congressional offices and others are protesting in the rain in Texas. It is happening in communities all over the US. DID YOU CALL YET? This is great...word has been getting out via social media (just what the GOP do NOT want). (202)224-3121

In addition to the giveaway to the 1%, the "tax cut" bill provides a framework for future budgets/appropriations. The 2018 Budget hasn't been enacted yet and might have to be tweaked based on the changes to the tax giveaway legislation (the Senate did their version of the 2018 Budget bill in September and now the House has to do theirs or pass the Senate's version). Once that happens, then there are the appropriations that usually end up being "Omnibus" (although they tend to do DOD & DHS by themselves and "minibus" or "Omnibus" the other departmental appropriations).

The only way to prevent the sequester would be to keep the spending below that 1.5 trillion. which means cuts somewhere else if they pork it up for GOP votes. But then they always try to waive military cuts (which are supposed to be equal to domestic based on the Budget Control Act) but haven't been able to muster the votes for that... otherwise they may try to manipulate the numbers in other ways to keep the sequester from happening.

But remember, Lyin' Ryan and Turtle are proven liars.

8. AARP needs to lobby the Repubs. They're the ones in charge. And Trump.

The Dems are putting their eggs in the basket of DACA. I haven't heard an urgency from the leaders about Medicare or Social Security.
