Egyptian Christians Reject Meeting With Pence in Protest of Trump's Jerusalem Decision

Source: Haaretz

Egypt’s Coptic Church has rejected a meeting requested by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence during his visit in the region later this month in protest against Washington’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, MENA state news agency reported on Saturday.

The Church “excused itself from hosting Mike Pence” when he visits Egypt, citing Trump’s decision. The Church further said that the move came at “at an unsuitable time" and said it was made "without consideration for the feelings of millions of people,” MENA said.

"We pray for everyone to have wisdom and rationality in addressing issues that affect the peace of the Middle East peoples," the church added in a statement.

On Friday, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb, the head of al-Azhar, Egypt's highest Islamic body, announced that he was cancelling a meeting with Pence in a similar protest.

First the Palestinians and now...et tu, Christians? The Israeli government will welcome him, of course. It's unclear how the people of Israel feel about Trump's Jerusalem stunt.

1. Lots of Xians--Copts and Orthodox and others--are anti-Semites. Jews killed Christ. Encouraging Jewish badness = bad.

2. Copts are ultimately still of a kind with Egyptian Arabs. See (1). It's not like we don't understand ethnic nationalism; we just only like it when we agree with it, whether Catalonian or Irish or Palestinian or Rohingyan.

3. Uncle Tomism. Copts know that if they piss off the majority and their militants that it will go badly for them. They have more important fish to fry than defending Israel in some oblique sense, knowing that they'd take years to rebuild their churches and the churches' rebuilding that's been stalled for decades would be stalled for yet more decades. For the same sort of reason, Iranian Jews are very anti-Israel.

"Christian" is like saying "American" or "liberal." There are free-market, classical liberals; liberals who are progressive and in favor of a strong visible hand--theirs, preferably--in charge of the markets. The word says little outside of context, and typically when a politicized point is to be made all the context that undercuts that point is suspiciously omitted.
