Washington (CNN)As House Republicans spilled out of a closed-door meeting Wednesday night, it was clear that things hadn't gone well. Members gave wildly varying accounts of the proposal that's being cobbled together to keep the government open ahead of Friday's shutdown deadline.
Most importantly: Do they have the votes to pass a bill?
"I don't know," said Rep. Ryan Costello, R-Pennsylvania. "I don't think anyone knows."
By the dozens, members quickly shuffled to the House chamber for an unrelated vote. The leadership's whip team scurried about the floor, taking the temperature on a number of proposals to see which one could land them the coveted number of 218 votes.
There are many different options and questions for GOP leaders.......................................................

(22,912 posts)I could see providing Democratic votes for legislation that is otherwise acceptable that Republicans can't pass on their own because there are too many crazies in their caucus IF they were willing to work with us on a regular basis to craft acceptable legislation even when they don't absolutely need our votes. But they can't treat us like a doormat 95% of the time and then expect us to be there when they implode.
shutting down the gov actually helped them in the following elections. Dems best move, not to work with the fascists, let them self destruct. They are destroying the country anyway so lets get it over with, voting or not voting has consequences, we will see a lot of pain before the fascists are booted out of office and country.

(7,217 posts)They made what I call the "George Soros Tax Reduction Act of 2017" a priority over governing, so eff them.
And let all of it all come to a stop. At Christmas. And when the FAA shuts down ATC, let them. Let the Reich-wingers really feel what that "smaller government" they voted for really feels like.
A friend told me long ago that the Reich only responds when it his them - personally - so let them have it. No services, no SSA checks going out, no parks, no courts, no NIH, no cancer treatments, etc. See how they like it then.

(10,952 posts)they cobble together because Democrats are the adults in the room. Democrats need to dig in and not sign any agreement unless they get something in return. If Republicans try to blame a shut down on the Democrats, the Democrats need to be in lockstep with the message that:
1. Republicans are in control of both chambers
2. Republicans were more concerned with passing a bill that would give an enormous amount of wealth to Corporations and the 1%ers (while putting money in many Republicans in Congress at the same time) then in doing their job to make sure that the Federal Government continues to operate.
3. Due to poor planning on their part they expect Democrats to jump through whatever hoops the Republicans give them and Democrats are fed up with the slap dash, ill prepared, poor work process of the Republicans.
4. Democrats need to demand a major concession from the Republicans (i.e. stop rolling over).
A lack of planning on the part of the Republicans should not allow them to continue to operate in a sloppy irresponsible manner.

(45,442 posts)Active duty Military and law enforcement will still work without pay. Federal workers get unpaid leave, which in the past Congress has authorized back pay for both military and other federal workers. And many contractors get screwed hard and can go to hell.
And of course the people who need benefits and services will get screwed also. GOP doesn't even pretend to give a shit about them. They think the tax cuts have solved all the problems they care about.

(3,194 posts)Let them own the fucking shutdown. Make sure people know that in addition to the supposed Christmas tax bill, people won't be getting their paychecks or Social Security. Tell everyone that this chaos was brought about by the REPUBLICAN CONTROLLED CONGRESS.
