UN votes to condemn Trump's Jerusalem decision

Source: The Hill

BY MAX GREENWOOD - 12/21/17 12:17 PM EST

The United Nations on Thursday delivered a stunning rebuke of President Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, casting an overwhelming vote condemning the move and calling on the U.S. to withdraw the decision.

The final vote count in favor of the resolution was 128. Nine countries abstained from the vote, and 35 opposed the resolution.

The resolution – essentially a formal statement of a U.N. opinion – is not legally binding. But it is represents a symbolic condemnation of Trump's decision and exerts political pressure on him to reverse the move.

In the runup to the General Assembly vote, Trump and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley sought to warn countries against opposing the Trump administration's Jerusalem decision.

U.N. passes measure implicitly condemning Trump administration’s recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital

By Carol Morello December 21 at 10:09 AM

The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday overwhelmingly passed a measure rejecting the Trump administration’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, which was repeatedly criticized as undermining the prospects for peace.

Despite blunt warnings of U.S. funding cuts, 128 countries voted in favor of the nonbinding resolution and only nine voted against it. Another 35 countries abstained.

“The United States will remember this day in which it was singled out in this assembly for the very act of exercising our right as a sovereign nation,” Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N said. “We will remember it when, once again, we are called up to make the world’s largest contribution to the U.N., and we will remember it when many countries come calling on us to pay even more and to use our influence for their benefit.”

Characterizing the United States as being expected to “disrespected,” Haley said the U.S. embassy will be moved to Jerusalem regardless of the vote.

But only nine states – including the United States and Israel –voted against the resolution. The other countries which supported Washington were Togo, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Marshall Islands, Guatemala, and Honduras.
