Senate ends first year under Trump by voting to prevent shutdown

By Jordain Carney - 12/21/17 07:15 PM EST

The Senate approved a stopgap spending bill on Thursday night, ensuring there will be no shutdown days before Christmas and essentially completing a frenetic year on Capitol Hill — and the first under President Trump. Senators voted 66-32 to approve the roughly four-week continuing resolution (CR), which funds the government through Jan. 19, hours after it passed the House.

Seventeen Democrats voted for the measure, including several up for reelection next year in states carried by Trump such as Sens. Joe Donnelly (Ind.), Claire McCaskill (Mo.) and Joe Manchin (V.Wa.).
(snip)

Unlike in the House, where the stopgap bill passed with only Republican votes, GOP leadership needed the support of at least eight Democrats to get the 60 votes needed to overcome procedural hurdles. Speeding up the continuing resolution also required the agreement of every senator.

and reaching across the aisle. I got torn up in another thread for suggesting democrats fight fire with fire and demand CHIP, immigration reform, and not letting this tax scam off the hook with the PAYGO waiver.

We could have owned the news cycles and exposed the fraudster GOP for what they are. Killers.

But no, in the end all we got CHIP, something the GOP wants anyways.

Trump gets to sign the scam before Christmas, own the news cycle with his crappy tweets about golden showers of bonuses, and we lose the PAYGO card.

Good luck getting immigration reform next year without a bill loaded with GOP pet projects like huge defense spending increases.

Come January, it will be a very different ballgame. DACA will be at the forefront.
