US ambassador denies own comments, then denies denial

US ambassador's 'fake news' claim backfires

(CNN)..............................

"Chaos in the Netherlands. There are cars being burned. There are politicians that are being burned ... and yes, there are no-go zones in the Netherlands," said now-US ambassador to the Netherlands Peter Hoekstra in 2015 at the David Horowitz Freedom Center's 2015 Restoration Weekend.

........................

When Wouter Zwart of CNN affiliate and Dutch broadcaster NOS asked about those comments in an interview in the US Capitol, Ambassador Hoekstra said he never said them.

"That is actually an incorrect statement; we would call it fake news," the Ambassador responded. "I never said that."

Zwart's report on NOS' Nieuwsuur program then plays the specific portion of Ambassador Hoekstra's 2015 comments. Zwart told CNN he did not play video of the remarks for Hoekstra, saying he "can't imagine he did not know of its existence," because it was widely available online.

.........................
"I didn't call that fake news," the Ambassador interjects. "I didn't use the words today. I didn't think I did."

"I didn't call that fake news." The new US ambassador to the Netherlands lied twice to a Dutch news crew: first, he denied comments he made on video in 2015. Then, he denied that denial. http://cnn.it/2ziamkk

Seems @petehoekstra is also against gay marriage and abortion (https://nltimes.nl/2017/07/26/new-us-ambassador-hoekstra-gay-marriage-abortion …).

When its Muslims against these values, it's a problem. But when its Trump appointees, right-wingers say nothing. 🙄🤔

That name sounded familiar and sure enough--he is a former repug congressman.

Trump’s ambassador to the Netherlands just got caught lying about the Dutch

......................Hoekstra was being interviewed by reporter Wouter Zwart for current affairs program Nieuwsuur. The interview is not playing well in the Netherlands. (One sample headline: “The new Trump Ambassador to the Netherlands, Pete Hoekstra, lies about his own lies.&quot

But the former congressman was always going to be a tough sell for one of Europe's most liberal countries.

[Trump’s pick for ambassador to this gay-friendly country is a gay rights opponent]

Though Hoekstra was born in the Netherlands, his family emigrated to Michigan when we was a toddler. He served as a Republican congressman for a decade and a half, eventually chairing the House Intelligence Committee.

In that time, he adopted several positions that are at odds with core Dutch values. Hoekstra is opposed to same-sex marriage and gay rights. In Congress, he voted repeatedly to limit women's rights to abortion. He supports the death penalty and has argued passionately that refugees are a threat to European security........................................

I am concerned. What I hate about him is that he was so "anti-Clinton" and wanted him impeached over Monica while he was doing the same thing but even worse (his wife was sick). John Edwards did the same thing while his wife Elizabeth had cancer, he had an affair and illegitimate kid.

I'm not talking about making him persona non grata or anything - just wondering if the Netherlands has the ability to request his replacement.

12. No because embassies are a territory of the country that established the embassy

and that country selects their own Ambassadors. So if you walk into the U.S. embassy in the Netherlands (in Amsterdam I believe), you are entering a United States territory and are considered to be on U.S. soil. Thus the country where it is located has no say regarding who resides there unless they break ties and/or order it closed.
