Former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos reportedly prompted the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election by drunkenly revealing knowledge of Russian opposition research on Hillary Clinton.
Papadopoulos, a former foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, in May 2016 allegedly revealed to Australias top diplomat in Britain the fact that Russian officials were shopping possible dirt on Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, likely implying that Russian officials were shopping them to the Trump campaign, The New York Times reported Saturday.
Four former and current officials with knowledge of the situation told the Times that the Australian diplomat informed his U.S. counterparts, which may have then triggered the July 2016 investigation.
Papadopoulos has since become a target of special counsel Robert Muellers probe into the matter.

UPDATE:
Papadopoulos role in Trump campaign appears extensive in undisclosed documents: report
BY JOHN BOWDEN - 12/30/17 01:28 PM EST
Former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopolous appears to have had a larger role in the Trump campaign than campaign officials are willing to admit, according to documents reported Saturday by The New York Times.
Documents obtained by the Times show that Papadopolous was instrumental in setting up a meeting between then-candidate Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and coordinated directly with later-ousted White House Chief Strategist Stephen Bannon in setting up the meeting and arranging talking points.
Other documents show that Papadopolous, then a member of the Trump campaign's fledgling foreign policy team, also met on behalf of the campaign with officials from the Israeli and Australian embassies. At least one conversation with a top Australian diplomat, led to the FBI investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, the Times reported.
The expanded role described by the documents comes in stark contrast to comments made by other former Trump campaign officials including Michael Caputo, who in October called Papadopolous a "coffee boy" who had "nothing to do with the campaign."

(22,674 posts)But he did feel it was important to bring up the old dead horse story about Hillary's E-mail server just in time for the election.
Oh, the irreparable harm he has done to our country because of his careless, lopsided, and illegal October 28th actions.

(51,638 posts)Yes misogyny, Russia, likability, not campaigning enough in certain states, etc. But Comey is the one that did it all by himself. He should be mentioned in the history books as the primary factor that to this shit show.

(10,500 posts)It is impressive that Hillary had the election won--decisively--even after the first two times he rigged it.
She ran a great race.

(33,643 posts)There was no actual 'need for secrecy' when it came to informing Congress that some 'missing' emails were found on the Abedin (or was it Weiner?) computer ... contrary to how it's being constantly represented, the 'investigation' was never formally re-opened, and Comey was legally obligated by an agreement he'd made with Congress when he concluded the investigation ... to whit: he agreed to inform Congress immediately if and when addtl' emails/evidence is found.
The Russian Conspiracy OTOH was a truly active/ongoing investigation, one where 'destruction of evidence' was a very real threat (which is a big reason why there are rules against discussing ongoing investigations, but there are many others: risk of flight, giving heads-up so cover stories can be concocted, etc).
It really is silly to conflate these two 'events', when in reality they were VERY different in nature ... and I for one am sick of seeing it here.
The GOP CongressCritters leaking the info to the press, and then our lovely 'Liberal Media' running with WALL TO WALL fucking coverage just days before the election, breathlessly referring to it as a 'reopening of the investigation into misdeeds by HRC' when it was NO SUCH FUCKING THING ... are the ones people should be 'blaming', if blame must be ascribed.

(15,290 posts)there was a witness named Alexander Butterfield, a Nixon aide who had installed the WH taping system, called to testify. He revealed the existence of the taping system and the tapes of all Oval Office conversations. Ultimately it was the tapes that solidified the impeachment case against Nixon.
Papadopolous seems like he might be the Butterfield equivalent in the Russia investigation.
