Trump continues to push, without evidence, that 'many people are voting illegally'

Hours after shuttering his controversial voter fraud commission, President Donald Trump called Thursday morning for voter identification laws and pushed once again his baseless assertion that many people are voting illegally.
Many mostly Democrat States refused to hand over data from the 2016 Election to the Commission On Voter Fraud. They fought hard that the Commission not see their records or methods because they know that many people are voting illegally. System is rigged, must go to Voter I.D., the president wrote on Twitter Thursday morning.
As Americans, you need identification, sometimes in a very strong and accurate form, for almost everything you do.....except when it comes to the most important thing, VOTING for the people that run your country. Push hard for Voter Identification! he continued in a second post moments later," he continued.
Laws requiring voters to present identification at their polling places in order to cast ballots have proven controversial, with Republicans arguing that such legislation prevents voter fraud. Democrats, who mostly oppose such laws, have argued they disenfranchise minority voters, who are generally less likely to possess the type of identification the laws require.

(46,121 posts)When you register to vote (I moved, so I went through the process), you have to show a federal identification document such as a drivers license which shows your current address. You have to complete and sign a form so your signature and address are recorded in the Election Book. (The assumption is that if you have a driver's license, you must have earlier presented documents of birth in the U.S. or naturalization.)
When you come to vote, while we don't require identification cards, many voters show them anyway. As pollworkers, we have to process you before you can vote. We ask for your name and repeat it audibly for the pollwatchers. We ask for the spelling and locate your name in the Election Book. If it's there, you sign again and we compare signatures. We also have you sign a coupon book to record your number as a voter that day. We tear out a coupon which you then give to the administrator of the voting machine. That coupon is put in numerical order on a string. When you vote, the administrator of the voting machine waits and listens for electronic noise when you finalize your vote and looks to ensure the number of voters on that machine changes. (The number of tickets must match the electronic tabulation of votes of that machine.)
If your name is not in the book, we provide a provisional ballot and that vote is sealed and transferred to the county Board of Elections where the name and address and signature are cross-referenced and either allowed to be tabulated or it is refused. (Often someone has moved and forgot to re-register at their new precinct before the election.)
There is so much scrutiny as at least four people are involved in any given vote, I don't see how a significant number of fraudulent votes can be cast.

(811 posts)I had to show Id to get my card. I have been going to the same polling place with the same poll workers for years. The only trouble I ever had was when I first received my card, they had me in wrong District. I voted at the proper place, less than a mile from my house but my vote was provisional. I went to courthouse and they said they didnt know how I got put in the polling place that was far from my home. I believe the law states you have to vote at the nearest poll. We vote on a touch screen that has a paper roll with your choices. I would like to have a copy of my votes in case there is a challenge rather than the I voted sticker. If would think your registration card would count as an Identification. Need to help voters get their id and registrations. Virginia is tough because if you need a copy of birth certificate it has to come from Richmond and not local courthouses which I think is ridiculous in the Information Age.

(23,105 posts)I knew he wouldn't give up on voter suppression, Putin has explained to him how important this is so he's determined to suppress every dem vote possible. He wants passports because poor people don't have them, he already came out with that in today's tweet. Next - eliminate early voting and all weekend voting, removing lots of Hispanics from voting roles through trumped up lists, and closing precincts in minority heavy areas. That and Russia spending billions for repugs will get him and the traitor party the next 2 elections, in his and Putins plans.
