Stockholm metro explosion: Man killed after picking up suspected hand grenade

Source: The Independent

A man died after he picked up a suspected hand grenade and it detonated, killing him and injuring his companion, Swedish police said.

The blast took place on Sunday at about 1100 local time [1000 GMT] just outside the Varby Gard subway station in Huddinge, a residential district in greater Stockholm, said regional police spokesman Sven-Erik Olsson.

The man, who was in his 60s, was rushed to hospital while a woman, in her mid-40s, received “minor wounds” to her face and both legs.

“The man was seriously injured after he picked up something from the ground and this device exploded,” Mr Olsson said.

In Malmö, the grenades are frequently old weapons from the wars in the Balkans. The police assume that someone imported a large cache of grenades, which has then been distributed to criminal gangs.[10] In addition to grenade attacks, there are a significant number of related bomb attacks with improvised explosive devices, including homemade bombs.[11][12] The number of incidents involving explosives tripled between 2008 and 2016.[13]

I guess it's easier to leave a grenade and walk off than to fire a gun when there is every chance you will be caught.

What possible profit would there be in it for them?

This is assuming the prime motivating factor for Swedish criminal gangs is the same as it is elsewhere: money.

Why the gangs use them to terrorize the town, I have no idea.

The fact that it blew it up and killed a man leads me to believe it was an "actual" grenade. This is an explosive story.

Usually you have to pull the pin then toss it, not just pick it up unless it was unstable?
