Kansas state rep: Black people 'responded the worst' to marijuana because of 'their genetics'

Source: The Hill

A GOP lawmaker in Kansas said that African Americans respond worse to marijuana because of “their genetics" and "their character makeup."

State Rep. Steve Alford (R) said at a “legislative coffee” session on Saturday that Jim Crow-era policies banning drugs such as pot were to protect other citizens from the drug use of black Americans.

“Basically any way you say it, marijuana is an entry drug into the higher drugs,” Alford said, as first reported by The Garden City Telegram. “What you really need to do is go back in the ’30s, when they outlawed all types of drugs in Kansas and across the United States.”

“What was the reason why they did that? One of the reasons why, I hate to say it, it’s the African Americans, they were basically users and they basically responded the worst off those drugs just because of their character makeup, their genetics and that,” he continued.

This is a real Harry Anslinger quote. Anslinger was the first commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, Washington.

“There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the U.S., and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others.”

he notes that Coloradans are lighting up in the streets, and that's a violation of his desire to breathe clean air.

Zach Worf, president of Finney County Democrats, interrupts and tells him that's against the law in Colorado.

I just moved from Colorado to Iowa, and it's amazing the picture that people have of Colorado, as if you can't walk down the street without somebody blowing weed smoke in your face.

Worf is the president of Finney County Democrats.

From the Garden City Telegram:

On Saturday, Worf said that for a brief moment he felt like he’d been taken back in time. He added that after the Q&A session concluded, he told Alford his comment was “the most racist thing [he had] ever heard.”
