Colleagues rally around handcuffed teacher as Louisiana superintendent defends raise

Source: CBS News

A Louisiana school board is under fire after a teacher was forcibly removed from a board meeting after questioning the superintendent's pay. Deyshia Hargrave was handcuffed and arrested by a city marshal Monday night in Abbeville. The middle school English teacher was booked on one count of resisting an officer and one count of remaining on premises after being forbidden. She later posted bond.

Superintendent Jerome Puyau is not commenting on Hargrave's arrest, but is defending his raise, reports CBS News' Vladimir Duthiers.

"It was time that we brought to the board a salary that's commensurate with what superintendents are making," Puyau said.

Since 2012, Puyau has been making about $110,000 per year, according to two board members. With the new contract that was approved Monday, he could earn $38,000 more. In 2016, the average Louisiana teacher's salary was around $49,000.

To her credit another board member, Laura Lebeouf, said that the treatment of Deyshia Hargrave was disgusting, and that teachers there haven't had a raise in over a decade.

Giving the superintendent ANY raise, much less a 35% raise, when teachers haven't seen a raise in over a decade is a slap in the face to educators all across the country.

My Dad used to tell us that a school board or city council could mess with your life more than a President could. I know that is true after all these years. They can raise your taxes, make your kids study fake history and science and agree with stupid stuff like this. Run, show up to vote, help get smart people elected!

The way the teacher was treated is beyond belief, but at least it served to showcase the ridiculous $38,000 pay raise for the superintendent. I think that Puyau got a lot more than he bargained for.

Video is getting out...

This entire board - and superintendent need to step down.

Except for the one lady who said - she's never seen a man hauled out of there. Should have heard the groans in the room...

They all should go now.

(I am a school board member). Watching this video, I had to remind myself that their policies for how they conduct meetings are different than ours. It seemed that there was public comment allowed if they were recognized by their Board President. I was surprised when he called on the teacher again to speak, but that might be how they conduct their meetings (with no copy of the agenda in front of me, I have no way of knowing if this was unusual or not).

At first I thought that she was belaboring a point after the vote was taken that was more appropriate in another forum. Once the board votes, that's it. However, the President DID recognize her and never asked her to stop speaking or give her a time limit (what we do). Next thing I saw was the security officer coming to remove her. THAT was what really chapped my hide. She had been given the right to speak and was then removed from the room! Almost seems like a set-up.

That the educators have not been given a raise and the superintendent got that large a raise is appalling. Superintendents are in short supply right now and finding another is tough. But to not give your staff a raise when they are the ones in the classroom every day and "face" of your school district is horrible!
