Durbin: Democrats not willing to extend short-term funding past January

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said on Sunday that Democrats are only willing to extend government funding through Jan. 30 because they want to avoid short-term bills that don't address long-term budget issues.
"This is the fourth CR this fiscal year," Durbin told NBC's Chuck Todd on "Meet the Press," referring to a stopgap funding measure known as a continuing resolution.
"There are people, even five Republicans, who voted against the cloture on the continuing resolution because they're sick as well of these continuing resolutions. So you say, 'Why don't we wait another three weeks, another four weeks?' It has to come to end, and it will, if and when the president shows the leadership that we expect of him as president," he said.
Senate Democrats and Republicans failed to reach a government funding deal by midnight on Friday, resulting in a shutdown.

Ryan: House would back Feb. 8 funding bill
BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 01/21/18 11:05 AM EST
Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said Sunday that the House of Representatives would accept a Senate bill funding the government through Feb. 8, after it passed a measure to keep the governments lights on through Feb. 16.
Ryan told CBSs Face the Nation that the House will back a three-week funding bill from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
We have agreed that we would accept that in the House, and so we will see sometime today whether or not they have the votes for that. And thats really where we are right now, Ryan said. The Senate late Friday failed to pass a short-term funding bill to keep the government open, causing a partial government shutdown to go into effect at midnight.
Ryan on Sunday echoed his fellow Republicans and the Republican National Committee in placing the blame for the shutdown on Democrats.

(22,156 posts)how to bitch and moan about everybody else and the job they're doing (the democrats). Hypocrites...
Democrats are trying to do good for people, and not take away DACA, CHIP, and all of the other actions that tRUMP started, so blame tRUMP, who is solely responsible for this mess, and shouldn't opened his stupid mouth until something is in place.
The repugs, unless it's about taking money away from a problem (it's always too expensive, etc.) or giving money back to the 1%ers or military who doesn't need the money (have too much already) have massively proved that they are unfit to govern.
Selfish POS.
Go Dick Durbin!

(3,515 posts)Democrats must stick to their plan.
The Republicans have passed a tax bill that cannot fund our government. They plan to wait a bit and then cut mandatory programs that a large number of vulnerable Americans rely on like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.
If they are allowed to push through a stop-gap budget solution now that keeps them going so that they can scream that there isn't enough money after the tax season this year and after the gap in the funding really shows up, they will be able to persuade their base and enough other Americans that there is no link between their giveaways to the very rich and the budget hole.
We can't let them do this. They need to go back and tax the money where it is -- in the hands of the very rich and huge corporations.
Democrats need to stay strong and point out the problems with the Republican budget and tax bill and especially the relationship between the tax bill and budge shortfalls.
