Ex-Mississippi Gov. Barbour arrested with gun at airpor

Source: Associated Press

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour says he will pay a fine after being arrested with a loaded handgun in his briefcase as he went through an airport security checkpoint.

Barbour — Republican National Committee chairman in the mid-1990s and governor from 2004-12 — told The Associated Press on Tuesday he was trying to board a flight Jan. 2 from Jackson to Washington. He said he forgot he was carrying the gun, which he had put in his briefcase after an assistant removed it from his car days earlier.

“This was absentmindedness and nobody’s fault but mine,” Barbour said.

Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said a TSA officer working at an X-ray machine at a checkpoint at Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport spotted a .38-caliber revolver, loaded with five bullets, in a carry-on bag. TSA contacted airport police, who arrested the former governor. The TSA would not release the passenger’s name, but Farbstein confirmed it was a former governor, and Barbour confirmed to AP that it was he.

First rule... never point a gun at anything you don't want to shoot.

Second rule... never store a loaded weapon. Remember to clear the chamber.

There are more, but those were the first two.

how the hell did he not hear it or feel it when he was picking the case up by the handle to tote through airport security?

The only way I can figure that part is that he had a foam rubber or styrofoam insert cut to hold the gun the case to keep it from flopping around... and that means the briefcase really had no other purpose than carrying this gun.

If true, then how could he "forget" it was in that case?

a loaded gun, in their possession, should lose their right to own one. Forever.

A 71 year old man who is so "absent minded" that he can't even remember not to take a loaded gun to the airport, should not be allowed to have any guns!
