WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House said on Tuesday setting an age limit for buying AR-15-type assault rifles, the type purchased legally by a teenager who shot dead 17 people at a Florida high school last week, was under consideration.
I think thats certainly something thats on the table for us to discuss and that we expect to come up over the next couple of weeks, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said at a daily briefing when asked if President Donald Trump believed there should be an age limit for the purchase of AR-15-type rifles.

(342 posts)The very idea of spending time and effort on deciding anything other than the complete and total banning of private ownership of assault weapons is asinine. And I'm a lifelong gun owner/hunter. I see no need for military weapons in the hands of the public.

(14,838 posts)The president doesn't have the power to set this in place. Only congress can do that.
And they won't, so it doesn't matter what happy words trump uses.
He's lying.

(6,933 posts)or sells it to him under the table. This is just more of Trump kissing NRA ass and promising them no more than a band-aid over this latest mass killing.
We should not settle for less than a total banning of these killing machines AND a gun buy back from anyone who owns one already. PERIOD!

Mine was 650$ new in 1986. It has appreciated in value since. But lets go with bare bones $650. That's $5,850,000,000 in known, JUST AR-15 models in buyback costs.
Right now, the hot thing is to make your own. People are frantically doing it right now, because the lower part of the receiver is classified as the firearm. It just needs a serial number and you can mill one out of an aluminium block at home. The parts and tools to do this, are backordered nation-wide right now.
(As a gun owner, I will admit, the fact that people are frantically making them in anticipation of a ban is disturbing and poor taste if not outright sick.)

(84 posts)for anyone under 18 to buy a long gun anyway. I worked at a Western Auto as a college student in SC in the 80's and that was the case.
And it wasn't an SC thing as there wasn't even any state paperwork filled out for purchasing a long gun, just federal.

(4,996 posts)Yes. Under the Gun Control Act (GCA), shotguns and rifles, and ammunition for shotguns or rifles may be sold only to individuals 18 years of age or older. All firearms other than shotguns and rifles, and all ammunition other than ammunition for shotguns or rifles may be sold only to individuals 21 years of age or older. Licensees are bound by the minimum age requirements established by the GCA regardless of State or local law. However, if State law or local ordinances establish a higher minimum age for the purchase or disposition of firearms, the licensee must observe the higher age requirement.
