Trump Hotel Paid Millions in Fines for Unpaid Work

In the days around Donald Trump’s inauguration, the hotel bearing his name in downtown Washington, D.C., quietly settled two liens totaling more than $3 million for allegedly unpaid construction work. In one case, a contractor reached an agreement after receiving a phone call from someone his attorney identified as “Trump.”

The liens had both been previously reported. But their settlements had not. And the fact that they were handled right around the time when Trump took office—perhaps even at the behest of the then-president-elect himself—underscores just how politically sensitive the management of the Trump International Hotel was and is to the current White House occupant.

The largest payment was made to Joseph J. Magnolia, Inc. The family-owned D.C.-based company had filed a lien for $2.98 million on Dec. 21, 2016, for “the unpaid balance for work done” on the hotel, dating from that day back through Sept. 9, 2014, according to court filings. Joseph J. Magnolia, Inc. had done “plumbing, mechanical, and HVAC work, along with the site sewer, water, storm, and water services” per the notice. It also provided the labor and materials required to complete that work.

6. Good news for them,they would have NEVER been paid otherwise....

That asshat has run that FRAUD on workers (now using his kids??) on his projects for YEARS. Get a SIGNED contract,don't refuse to pay them--just pay them say 75% of it and it you want the rest then SUE US.

Most will let it go because of the time and the cost to try and get 25%. Trump has pocketed MILLIONS from hard working people with this SCAM.

7. It's a common scam run by the lazy rich

As a young man I worked with a local landscape company. We did a lot of work for rich out of town businesses like out of state banks and restaurants.

My boss had me run copies of one of his contracts. He was asking for an amount that was way higher than what labor and supplies would cost him. I told him he must be rich. He laughed and said if he got 75% of that he would be lucky. He said he got tired of suing and now he just pads the bill.

to take the work, knowing Trump's long and sordid history of non-payment.

If I were his project manager, I would have demanded 25% cash down, 25% held in escrow up front (i.e. final payment) and monthly, nay weekly, progress payments to be transferred 10 days after each invoice date. All work would stop immediately if the invoiced $ are not paid promptly.

Still, I'd never work on any of his projects knowing his shady past of screwing everybody!

10. The way it usually works is that periodic payments are made by the client to the contractor

as work is completed in exchange for lien wavers from the contractors for the amounts paid. If the client tries to cheat on the final payment, a lien (in my state a mechanics lien) is filed for the balance. The contractor can then seek to foreclose the lien in court. It's much faster and cheaper than suing for breach of contract.

11. Good way to handle these claims...

I had several friends w/ businesses and one of the biggest gripes that they had was getting paid for work that was done. Big problem. Impacts paying of workers, bills, etc., as well as headaches etc. not worth the trouble. Going to court etc. takes time and money, and w/ a small business, they can't afford this. Funny, this is the same treatment tRUMP and his ilk did to a lot of American owned business owners when they did work for them. Now, businesses doing business (if they still are) w/ tRUMP and his ilk, will mark up the bills a lot, or just walk away, it's not worth it. No wonder tRUMP has got to bring in foreign workers. Everybody else has seen through his and his family's scams.

Now, these friends accepts only the occasional job (not all of them anymore), and a big down payment (25% or thereabouts) from new clients and for those who had a good payment history with. Finding a highly skilled person in the tradecraft you need done, is almost impossible.

Now, you get great work, and great customers. Works out best for everyone involved.
