Scott said that the mandatory age to be able to purchase a firearm in the state will now be 21. Previously, it was 18 for some types of firearms and 21 for others.
We will require all individuals purchasing firearms to be 21 or older, he said. There will be exceptions for active duty and reserve military and spouses, National Guard members and law enforcement. The governor did not note whether this would applies to private sales which would potentially be an easy loophole for those under 21.
Additionally, the Florida Republican stated that every public school will now be required to have a law enforcement officer on site at all times.
Scott also proposed $500,000 to help fund mental health and school safety initiatives.

UPDATE
Florida governor breaks with Trump on arming teachers
BY JOSH DELK - 02/23/18 01:41 PM EST
Republican Florida Gov. Rick Scott is breaking with President Trump on the idea of arming teachers to deter mass shootings in the wake of a school shooting in south Florida that left 17 people dead.
"Let law enforcement do the keeping us safe, and let teachers focus on teaching," Scott reportedly said Friday, the same day Trump endorsed the idea of putting guns in teachers' hands at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).
Scott has long been expected to mount a 2018 Senate bid against Sen. Bill Nelson (D), but he has yet to announce whether or not he's running. The deadly shooting last week has thrust both Florida and gun policies back into the national spotlight.
Trump, who met this week with survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, said on Twitter that guns in the hands of "adept teachers with military or special training experience" could prevent future shootings.

(1,216 posts)But think about what was common thread between all school mass shootings beginning with Columbine?
Answer: All were gun free zones. No teacher was allowed to carry firearms. And there were no armed guards and metal screening machines at entrances. The solution to children's safety is staring us in the face. We just need to open our eyes and engage our brains.
More evidence: Attacks on school attending children in Israel dropped by 99% since teachers are allowed to carry firearms and armed guards are present at schools.

(37,648 posts)He didn't say armed guards, did he? Just "security." That could mean locks, bullet proof doors, a lot of things.

(33,982 posts)It didn't exempt all mental health illnesses, or even a meaningful correlation. The ACLU opposed it, and detailed why.

The law was not honorable/useful/meaningful. The correct solution is to craft a different type of law. It potentially impacted about 75,000 people. There are a LOT more people with mental health issues that disqualify them from firearms purchase or possession, via more credible means.

(18 posts)states assessing a tax on assault weapons. If we can't get the feds to ban them, let's pressure states to tax them based on the costs of medical needs for victims of mass shootings. So sure, you could buy an AR-15 for $400, but you would also pay an ANNUAL tax of $10,000 to cover medical bills for victims.

(4,140 posts)The cost to put a law enforcement officer in every one of them, assuming $150,000/year for pay, benefits, and fixed costs will be $630,000,000. Now imagine what each school could do with $150,000 for their educational mission. And this still doesn't guarantee another Parkland will not happen again.

Florida, if you elect this asswipe to the US Senate you deserve all the grief you get. He has pulled this crap over and over again, promises up until the election only to backtrack once (re)elected. Wise up FL!!
