OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) — A New York man has admitted that he struck a 10-year-old girl with a screwdriver, dragged her behind a vehicle with a rope and forced hot sauce into her duct tape-covered mouth.

The Post-Standard reports that Shawn Whaley pleaded guilty to 13 charges on Monday in Oswego County.

Defense lawyer Sal Lanza said Whaley was "sincere" and "remorseful."

District Attorney Gregory Oakes says the "incredibly brave" child escaped from a home and ran for help last August in Albion.

ALBION, N.Y. (AP) — A 10-year-old girl who was beaten repeatedly, forced to run with heavy packs and dragged behind a car escaped her tormentors as they slept to ask a neighbor for help, police in central New York said Friday.

Four adults were charged after the bruised and malnourished girl escaped on Wednesday from her home in rural Oswego County, north of Syracuse. Her treatment, which included beatings with a tightly rolled newspaper wrapped with electrical tape, had apparently been getting worse since April, Oswego County Undersheriff Gene Sullivan said.

Sullivan said the girl was forced to work outside clearing brush without access to water or a bathroom. She was served a single meal a day, doused in hot sauce.

In one incident, she was loaded with a backpack on each shoulder, one on her back and an additional weight on her front and made to run on a dirt road. She was followed in a car, which would hit her when she went too slowly.

I'm thinking that substance abuse probably played a significant role here. Those three look like they're on something, particularly the shininess of their eyes. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to learn that all three of these specimens are fans of crystal meth. The sores on the face of the charming fellow in the middle look a lot like those one sees on meth users.

People in their right mind do not behave like this. Whether it's substance abuse, mental illness, or plain old meanness, these three deserve everything they have coming to them. Absolutely despicable.

I worked as an attorney for Children’s Services for many years, specializing in termination of parental rights. We saw a lot of meth-inspired behavior.

I imagine it was often heartbreaking and emotionally draining, but protecting children is a very noble calling.

And yeah, that was my immediate thought on seeing these three malcontents. They'd fit right in as extras from a scene of Breaking Bad. Unfortunately for them and this little girl, it's not fiction. Maybe prison is the best thing for them, since the programs in prison may help them break their addiction. At the very least, they won't be able to harm the innocent while they're in prison.
