Lincoln woman accused of making up hate crime

Source: Omaha World Herald

LINCOLN — A lesbian woman from Lincoln who made national headlines last month when she reported she was the target of a hate crime will be charged with lying to police.

Lancaster County Attorney Joe Kelly said Tuesday he plans to charge Charlie Rogers, 33, with a misdemeanor charge of false reporting. A warrant has been issued for her arrest, but she had not been arrested as of Tuesday morning.

Rogers, a former University of Nebraska-Lincoln basketball standout, told police that three masked men broke into her central Lincoln home at about 4 a.m. July 22, bound her with zip ties and used a knife to cut epithets about her sexual orientation and gender into her arms and stomach. Rogers told police the men spray-painted graffiti on the wall and set fire to her home.

But a coroner's physician for Lancaster County told authorities that the cuts appeared to be self-inflicted.

This is the kind of crap that pisses me off and does a real disservice to real victims. I hope she gets help for the issues she clearly has.

she's just made it that much harder for legitimate victims of hate crimes.

If there's no repercussions for these kinds of false claims there's no disincentive to trying it.

At best she wasted law enforcement resources and makes it harder for others to file hate crimes charges.

At worst she could have sent some innocent people to jail for a long time.

Maybe I'm edging into paranoia here, but why is this being circulated now, when there's all this talk by the GOP about women lying about rape? Is this election just making me crazy?

Edited for typo.

First, I have never heard of someone carving anything into a living victim. It would be darn hard thing to do if a person was conscious.

Second, she was zip tied, an easy thing for a person to do to themselves.

Third, if a house is going to be burned down, why just use a little gas? And spray painting a house you are also going to burn down?

This poor woman is deeply troubled but hopefully an arrest and conviction will deter further wolf-calling.
