NBC15 received the following Press Release from the Attorney General's Office:
MADISON Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen and the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced today that they will file a Petition to Bypass Court of Appeals and Motion for Consolidation with the Wisconsin Supreme Court, in each of two legal actions originally commenced in Dane County Circuit Court challenging the states Voter ID law, 2011 Wis. Act 23. The Attorney General will further ask the Supreme Court to immediately stay each of the Circuit Court injunctions against the Voter ID law in a determined effort to ensure the law will be in place for the November 6, 2012, general election.
No quarter has been given in defending Voter ID. My action today, now allowed under the Courts rules of procedure, gives the Wisconsin Supreme Court another opportunity to bring prompt, clear resolution to the law and settle this matter in advance of the November elections, Attorney General Van Hollen said. While I respect the judicial process and the right to challenge a law in court, it is time for our Supreme Court to take control of these cases, Van Hollen said.
The cases in which the filings announced today will be made, and a chronological summary of those cases, is set forth below. In each of the cases, the DOJ represents the defendants, Governor Scott Walker and the members of the Government Accountability Board.
League of Women Voters of Wisconsin Education Network, Inc, et al. v. Scott Walker, et al., Dane County Case No. 11-CV-4669, Appeal No. 2012-AP-584....
