Todd Akin should drop out of Senate race, Romney says
Source: Washington Post
Mitt Romney added firepower Tuesday to Republican demands that embattled Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin withdraw from the race, saying that Akin should accept the counsel of his fellow Missourians.
In his first explicit call for Akins exit after the Missouri congressman used the phrase legitimate rape when talking about abortion and pregnancy, Romney said: As I said yesterday, Todd Akins comments were offensive and wrong and he should very seriously consider what course would be in the best interest of our country. Today, his fellow Missourians urged him to step aside, and I think he should accept their counsel and exit the Senate race.
Fighting back against enormous pressure by other Republican leaders to withdraw, Akin earlier Tuesday accused his critics of overreaction and used a radio interview to turn his campaign into a cause for the regular people against the big party people.
Akins remarks on rape and abortion have incited fury among liberals and conservatives alike. But in the afternoon interview on Mike Huckabees radio show, Akin said he would stick to his decision to stay in the race against Sen. Claire McCaskill (D).

I guess he's toast now that not even ROMNEY will stand by his side. Think about how Anthony Weiner resigned after that lewd photo scandal. Democrats wouldn't stand behind him, not even Pelosi or Obama.

He spoke minutes after five past and present Republican senators from Missouri, including highly regarded figures like John Danforth and Christopher "Kit" Bond, added their voices to widespread calls for Akin to end his campaign.

One difference is that where Weiner had to know that what he was doing was unacceptable and would be enormous trouble if he were caught. In addition, his action was not related to any policy he was pursuing. It was actually closer to the idiocy of the Kansas Congressman skinny dipping on a trip where he was representing the US.
Akin likely did not see that his comment was something that was far from the what he always says and tries to pass legislation - even with Ryan - on. The fact that he and Ryan had legislation that was very far outside the mainstream on this increased the stakes on the comment - and likely made it more likely that the people trying to win the election for Romney and the Senate, could not treat this as something they could disagree with and then ignore. It was a political move that they had to make - even if many knew that the policy implication of Akin's stupid remark was exactly what they put in their platform.
But Akin has the RW religious people backing him - even if some disagree with his idiotic comments on conception. Whether that is enough to tough it out - only time will tell. In a similar way, Weiner had the support of many on the far left - losing most only when he repeatedly lied causing many of them to later be embarrassed that Andrew Breitbart, one of the sleaziest people in the media, had been in this one instance correct - while they backed Weiner in claiming it was not true. (Seriously, the fact that this alone was used to give Breitbart credibility is a BIG reason to not be happy with Weiner.) After it was found that he had lied - as well as having really sent inappropriate photos to women he really did not know, I don't see how people here wanted people like Obama to defend him.
