Trump privately presses for military to pay for border wall
Source: The Washington Post
President Trump frequently said Mexico would pay for a wall along the southern border as he sought the presidency in 2016. Now, he is privately pushing the U.S. military to fund construction of his signature project.
Trump, who told advisers he was spurned in a large spending bill last week when lawmakers only appropriated $1.6 billion for the border wall, has begun suggesting the Pentagon could fund the sprawling construction, citing a national security risk.
After floating the notion to several advisers last week, he told Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) that the military should pay for the wall in a meeting last Wednesday in the White House residence, according to three people familiar with the meeting. Ryan offered little reaction to the notion, these people said, but senior Capitol Hill officials later said it was an unlikely prospect.
The individuals spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk freely about private discussions.

Now he wants to tell the military where to spend the money he just authorized.

(34,195 posts)Only $641 million is earmarked for new primary fencing in areas that currently have no barriers, and the money can be spent only on operationally effective designs that were already deployed as of last May. That means the new prototype designs the Trump administration is exploring cannot be built.

(50,559 posts)Every dollar is already allocated to something. To put a dollar in a "wall account" means one has to come out of the "war of convenience" account or the "idiotic parades in front of the White House" account.
"Mr. President, we can allocate $20 million for your wall."
Trump goes on television to brag that the military is now "fully on board with the border wall."
...seven months later...
"Where's my parade? I want a parade!"
'Sorry, Mr. President, we gave all the money for the parade to the wall account.'

(3,056 posts)We have veterans living on the street, veterans dealing with PTSD, active military woefully underpaid, and I'm sure a plethora of things I don't even know about. So instead of investing in the things our current/retired military really needs, first he going to blow over $30 million on a fricking parade, and now he wants to build his stupid wall on their backs, too. Somebody explain to me why Republicans are viewed as the ones supporting our military.

(36,816 posts)How to Build Trumps Wall - Privatize It
Republicans have often found a way to tax people surreptitiously by privatizing many public works projects to corporations rather than have govt pay for it. A fee/toll is a tax under another name.
The corporations/investors are granted a multi-year license with a guaranteed profit.
This could also be done with Trumps Wall with Mexico.
Corporations/investors front the money to build it and they will be paid by Mexico.
It gives republicans a chance to save the govt money by investing in it and show their confidence in Trumps word that Mexico will pay for it .
No govt backed bonds.
No cost to the govt,,, no need for taxes,,, profit for the patriotic investors who believe in Trump.
Win win all around.
Even Trump can show his patriotism and shrewd business savvy by investing in it.
